Heads of the valley

Going to Swansea tomorrow from east Angelia will be coming down the M50 have not been down that way for some while. The question is are the roadworks finished after Abergavenny as I fancy going over the heads of the valley for a change as the trailer is light or would it be better to carry on to Newport and across the M4

Heads is quicker.

Heads of the Valley is still undergoing major roadworks and has night time closures in place, I am not sure what times they close/re-open though as I’m not using that route these days as all my work sends me along the M4 corridor anyway.

As to the previous posters statement that it’s quicker, well yes it can be if everything is running quiet and smoothly, I suppose it all depends what time you’ll be traversing it.

The stretch between Abergavenny and Brynmawr still has major restrictions, and contraflows, so depending on the time of day, can be rammed during busy periods.
Having said that, during rush hour the M4 between the Coldra (J24) and the Brynglas tunnels is a nightmare too, as is the elevated section past Port Talbot.

What time are you hitting Monmouth?

Will be leaving yard about 04.40 so after a 45 and Raglan services will be ready to leave there about 09.30

Mid morning both ways should be flowing reasonably well, baring any accidents/breakdowns. I’d go for the Heads, unless traffic information indicates problems that way.

Should be fine by the time you get there. I was over it four times last week at various times and it was fine but the kids have been off…

It’s impressive seeing the work going on tbf.

Heads of the valley all day if lite, yes roadworks are still there but the finished stretches are great.

There was a closure advertised this weekend up Blaenavon way, but it’s usually gone by 6am Monday.

As others have said it’s a truly impressive bit of civil engineering. However, whether I’ll live long enough to see it dualled all the way from Abergavenny to the M4 I don’t know.

Will be quiet that time of day and I reckon it’s a brilliant run along the M50 to Swansea via the heads of the valley road and it’s going to be even better when it’s finished and there’s numerous lay-bys too, enjoy.

Thanks for all the replies the heads wins I am looking forward to it,it will make a nice change.

A few weeks ago…

I’ll see your Heads of the Valleys (your pics were evidently taken in summer)and raise you the A468 Newport-Caerphilly… taken from just past the railway bridge.

No I hadn’t tipped the lorry over but I can’t figure out how to rotate the damned image!

This weekend’s closure is ended - the valleys are open! They have a facebook page - A465 section 2.
I always go that way when it’s open - the work they have done up there is amazing - well worth the trip. Sadly, Swansea is also open - glad my job involves going away from it every night!

Let us know what you think of it .

Really enjoyed it. It made a very pleasant change from my usual A14 corridor from Felixstowe to the West Midlands and back. The only bit what spoilt it a bit was the amount of litter on the side of the road but that’s every where nowadays it’s such a shame people can not keep a rubbish bag in there vehicles and throw it in a bin when they find one
