I’ve been on a course today and said I’d never used headlights in tunnels in the UK as it wasn’t mandatory. The teacher told me it was and I was breaking the law.
Who is right?

It’s advisable, but not mandatory. The theory test for HGV drivers has a question on this and in the explanation for the answer it says you should turn on your headlights, not you must.
Doubt you’re breaking a law but it’s probably best practice to have headlights on in case of tunnel lighting failure.
I try to, helps at night when you can idiots in black cars without their lights on.

I got a tunnel question on my theory anf failed. I chose retune radio (as some tunnels have signs about tunnel info on radio). Apparently the correct answer was take off your sunglasses which seemed too stupidly obvious to me!!

As already said, it’s not mandatory. However, It’s good practice.
You should use your headlights when natural light drops below normal daylight, in rain, inclement weather etc.
My wagon has automatic headlights and they’re pretty boldly good to be fair. They come on automatically when light falls, in rain etc. they also come on in tunnels, even when street lights are present. If the truck reckons they should be then chances are it’s probably a good idea to have them on.
At the end of the day, it’s near as damned it free to use them.

I didn’t like the automatic headlights on the rental merc. As soon as you drive through an area with trees/tall buildings throwing shade on the road, the headlights turned on an off, as if you are flashing people.

Does the truck tell you to wipe yer arse after having a dump, ffs and you call yourselves professional drivers
And the job has gone to ratshite … I despair
Always put my headlights on in tunnels coz I’m a good boy.
Nothing worse than entering a tunnel in the dark, although the wife does make me turn the light off due to a funny face I pull upon entry.
I am guilty of forgetting to take my sunglasses off though, mainly as I wear normal glasses and have to swap them over.
