Headlight Flashing

I drive past a test centre regularly on the afternoon school run and have seen a few instances of people’flashing in’ training vehicles.
A few weeks ago there was a rigid ahead of me waiting to turn right across me to go into the centre - most probably at the end of a test. I didn’t flash him (I don’t flash training vehicles) but the car behind did and I watched in my mirror as he ‘accepted’ and turned in.
What would be the examiner’s view of this? I’ve wondered if the driver would have failed literally two minutes from parking up.

It’s perfectly acceptable to go after being flashed in a training vehicle. It’s just frowned upon to flash other vehicles in a training vehicle or on test.

It’s also frowned upon by the Police

Nothing wrong with it, simple courtesy really

As long as its obvious the car has slowed enough to allow the turn safely then you’re just making use if the conditions.

Doesnt even need to flash, if the other vehicle shows sufficient intent to allow you to proceed or at least you’re not going to impeed them, then you do so…without bullying, so my examiner told me.

I’m a bit surprised at this (Highway Code says etc. etc.) but it makes sense.

Flashing headlights simply mean - NOTICE ME AND WHAT I AM DOING

This ^^. Basically they are saying that they are giving you the opportunity to turn, but of course it is up to you to check for safety and the if you want to commit to turning/passing etc.

In the 3 months I have been driving rigids, I have had this, especially when turning into a junction with cars passing my left. Sometimes the person ahead has flashed me a couple of more times but due to the ‘overhang’ when turning I have had to wait for cars on my left passing by.

I very rarely flash anyone out or across, I think its safer to let them decide when the want to move. I flash other wagons in on the motorway, mostly artics as they’re usually to engrossed in making a cuppa or just cant tell when they’ve passed me :unamused: ‘superior drivers’

Or perhaps they are polite enough to offer you the courtesy of letting them know when you are happy for them to move over. I know when my trailer is past another wagon. But I’d rather let the driver inform me he is happy with the gap. So I do wait unless it’s obvious they are not bothering. Then I put an indicator on and wait some more. Only after all that will I realise they are to idle to flash and go in any way. Still say thanks with my indicators in case I missed the flash - and if I didn’t it’s a sarcastic thanks :grimacing: :grimacing:
