I have my medical booked for 1 June and have been getting ready for the theory and hazard perception tests. The LGV-specific theory feels strange - I can learn it and feel reasonably confident about passing it, but without actually knowing anything about it. For example, I can say with confidence that you’d use a dolly knot to sheet down a load. But I couldn’t recognise a dolly knot of it walked in front of me, let alone know how to tie one.
The hazard perception stuff is all new to me, but my son took his in advance of his bike test recently. His advice was that the less seriously he took it, the better he did. I was sceptical, but after doing a mock test with no preparation, I see what he means. Basically I clicked every time I saw anything that could remotely be perceived as a hazard - junctions, vehicles overtaking me, anything! And scored 89 out of 100 on the mock test. So, rightly or wrongly, I feel pretty confident about passing it. The real test for me will be the moment I have my assessment drive - everything before that seems just like jumping through hoops.
