I have just been having a think about the “battle cruisers” round the ramp, or Shoreditch NCP to
give it it’s correct name.
The White Horse, Ship and Blue Ball, Crown, Dolphin, Van Tromp, Knave, Jolly Butchers, Well and Bucket, Panther, Marquis of Cornwallis, and my particular favourite The Green Gate.
The London beer was like pee, one of the locals suggested we try a half of bitter in a pint glass
topped up with a bottle of Export. Much better.
Hungry on the way back? You could call at Mucky Mick’s chip shop, the Shish Kebab Salad and
Chips restaurant, Bruce Lees or the Beagle Shop where you could get tomorrow’s Sun.
You will have memorys of slack alice then axle? happy days sadly gone for ever, any of you out there frequent tooley st in the 70s? kings head, copper on tower bridge, anchor tap adjacent courage brewery[long gone]st johns tavern next to park, did digs if you wasn,t fussy.
Yes, I remember Slack Alice! She generally performed at the Van Tromp.
I wonder what she is doing now?
I preferred the better - looking girls at the Green Gate!
You can have a virtual walk round the area now thanks to Google Street, most of those delightful
pubs are no longer and some have been demolished.
The White Horse is still there and what was the Crown round the corner in Redchurch Street,
remember Jim the landlord and the polished Acrow holding up the ceiling?
ah alconbury truckstop, back in 93,94,95, i had just past my test in 93, working for waddingtons games distribution in leeds, running down to paddock wood and upto alconbury 3 times a week, happy times in the bar, regular faces, good friends, good laugh, very fond memories, its where i met my wife, excellent times all gone now

It is where we all met your wife

Just my little joke… she said!
Wheel Nut:
We have oop north and darn sarf, water runs downhill always. so the beer brewed in the sarf is brewed from our ■■■■ after we have drunk the proper northern beer
Until you have drunk Timothy Taylors Landlord or Mashams Old Peculiar or even the newer brews from the Black Sheep or Thorne, Snaith or Selby you savverners wouldn’t know what real beer even looks like
Most of the little breweries make a decent pint, wherever they may be, when I was carting Holsten Pils around I used to visit all of them from the Borders down to the South Coast, most had a clubhouse with very cheap beer, I could get fed & ■■■■■■ for less than a tenner
I’ve tried most of them at some point, but the best of the lot is Stella, no beer can make you fight like a few pints of that stuff

But it did’nt help the Belgians much when they met up with those Germans drinking Becks for a fight in 1940.
If we’d have managed to spike the German’s beer with some cask strenghth Glennfiddich we might have stopped the war before it began

But they got a shock when they found out that the Germans were there to close down the brewery and to shoot the shirt lifters not shag them.

Anybody remember Aldgate roundabout park, The Longbar and Red Lion where the stripper smoked cigarettes in “an unusual way”
or was it just another dream
I remember waking up on a Saturday morning in chesterfield with a regular back load of roof tiles from Goole, still in my clothes from the night before ,jump in the seat light a ■■■ and crack on home. P.S I was usually the last one out.

Everybody carried some “going out” clothes, or even bought some en route.
How we survived I don’t know.
Overnights now just aren’t the same.
i remember not being long married and having to sneak a clean pair of jeans and a decent shirt out of the house in the bottom of my bag for the regular friday night in ponty
your right , times really have changed
If I don’t know you, we will have mutual aquaintances, not that I stopped at Ponte that much, was never allowed. Much preferred Retford Chesterfield (town) and Newark anyhow, oh and Whitby on a Wednesday.
