Have eyesight rules changed?

I was always under the understanding that your weaker eye with correction had to be 6/12 or better iv just read on dvla d4 form that the weaker eye has to be at least 6/60 with correction and the better eye 6/75 with correction.
Any help chaps

This is basically correct.
It used to be an acuity of 6/9 in the best eye,and 6/12 in the other, but that has now tightened up to 6/7.5 in the better eye,but a lower accuity of 6/60 required in the worst eye,(So low as to be almost blind!).
I was talking to my optician about it last week and he thinks it’s a joke.
Some drivers on here have different interpretations of the new regs,or ways to get round them, you takes your choice.
My advice, for what it’s worth,go to your optician early and get their opinion whether or not you will reach the new standard.
This gives them the chance to give you a new spectacle prescription,or recommend eye surgery to reach the required standard.
At my last eye test,I required new spectacles, and as I am required now to renew my HGV entitlement every year, the optician did advise me to have another eye test in 6 months so there is sufficient time to get eye surgery if required before my next medical is due.
A couple of months ago, there was a very misleading article in a well known trucking publication, regarding eyesight the reqirement for truckers, that was very wide of the mark.
I wrote to the editor and recieved a reply saying that the article had been submitted by an independant journalist, but agreed it was misleading and would correct this in a later edition.
I have seen nothing yet

Thanks for that iv got an eye test in two weeks and I have a strong stigma in my left eye and though the 6/12 was going to be borderline but I can see 6/60 easy.
I was worried that the opticions could report you for failing instead of trying to cure you before your next medical.
Very misleading some things on the net a lot of things say worst eye 6/12 and then some say worst eye 6/60 which I believe is the top line ■■

Also the field for peripheral vision has changed from 120 to 160 degrees.

That is why it is better to go to the optician for your eye test rather than the doctor, who will probably fail you if you can’t make the standard.
I went to the optician, who gave me a new prescription and a pass on my D4.I sent off the D4 and got my new specs by the time my licence was returned,so no time was lost.
The way the standard is expressed is the descripion of the Snellen chart, which is what the optician or doctor asks you to read.
In the case of the figure 6/12,the figure 6 refers to the chart being viewed from 6 metres, the other figure refers to the size of the letters, the higher the number, the bigger the letter.
Therefore, from when the standard was 6/9,the new standard of 6/7.5 is the next line down on the chart.

6/60 is defiantly the top line then? I can see that even unaided so should fly through with my glasses

6/60 is probably painted on the side of a building, and if you can’t see that, then you must be blind!.

2 years ago i started using reading glasses
3 months ago things in the distance were a bit blurred
went to opticians for eye test and was given varifocal glasses
i said to optician do i need to tell vosa or dvla as i am hgv driver
she said no need , eyes are not that bad
i said do i need to wear them when driving or all the time
she said up to you
anyway after 2 weeks of getting used to them
i wear them all the time and cant drive without them now
everything is so clear and when driving the view is like HD
my question is
medical next year with eye test
do i tell the doctor i wear glasses all the time even tho its not on my licence
do i wear them for the chart eye test

top line is A :grimacing: :grimacing: :grimacing: pass :sunglasses: good luck

If you get your optician to do your eye test, and you need your specs to meet the requirement of 6/7.5,the optician will put it on your D4 that you need specs to meet that standard, that will then be put on your next licence by the DVLA.
I have bi focals,I need one lens for reading, and the other for distance sight. For mid range sight I don’t need specs, but now it’s easier to wear them all the time.

No, legally blind if it’s below 3/60, I can only just read 3/60 unaided with my worse eye.

So basically you need to see the bottom line with your good corrected eye and the top line with your bad corrected eye if I’m reading this correctly or I’m I missing somthing

Please ask the doctor as i did a few years ago. If you can try reading the chart without your glasses. then if you or your doctor is not happy about it , Ask the doctor if you may try with your glasses on . I did and was succesfull without glasses.

number 1 . if u drove before 1997 its lower eye sight reqierment
and you get grandfarther rights.after 1997 tougher test
don’t go to docs for eye test go to spec savers etc
learn as you go a long I have

I believe that there is another set of rules from 1992 which is lower still, because the large letter A is blurred for me in both eyes uncorrected.

sorry it could well be 1992 can read 3 to 4 lines down
the chart unaided

Both years are about right, and both have different standards 1997 is slightly tougher than pre 1992.
Fortunately I fall into pre 1992 and don’t need to pass eye test with glasses, can’t remember if there is an earlier one, but those rules will also allow some one with only one eye to retain an HGV licence.

what is the pass rate for field test

I had to do the one where you use both eyes at the same time up at the hospital for the DVLA. I think they class it as a 70 degree cercumfrance (spelt wrong I know) from the centre mark i.e up,down, left and right. If you miss a dot inside this then it’s a fail. I missed one dot out of 120 which was about 79 degrees to the right of centre so I passed. I couldn’t tell you how many you are allowed to miss out of the required area.
