You would like to cone off a couple of lanes without no one watching your back?
Pick up rubbish without some one moving the only thing between you and a car/lorry moving at speed?
ISU’s work in pairs for safety.
Why not quote the whole thing instead of just what suits? If you think I was exaggerating, watch the highways blokes on the Witney bypass next time they decide to waste a few quid appeasing the owners of hay-burners (horse-owners). About 3 flashy trucks, 2 blokes to a cab (copy of the Sun optional but as they sit there for the entire job duration it’s a good idea) at least 3 blokes standing around chatting/watching for fanny etc and 1 poor sod actually doing something…Oh, and “the foreman” in a Hilux sat in the nearest layby “supervising” (texting someone).
Perhaps the job would be done quicker if the passengers and fanny watchers grabbed a broom/shovel?
Err…because they are not ISU’s?
Those are HA Contractors.
ISU teams do pick up litter and cut the grass mainly on motorways only as a secondary role.
They are there to provide a bigger safety area, carriage repair and better protection to the emergency services.

Don’t forget the fanny watching…

The control room I mean before anyone says anything.
Excellent bit of anticipated back-covering, you’re getting used to this forum
I’m sure that 99% of them are fine individuals, but I still maintain at least half of them should have been given 3.5te towtrucks and training, rather than 4x4s

… i’m not supposed to change tyres but I have. …
Big Jase:
Correct but we can assist with advice and get them on their way an hour quicker than having to wait for the recovery services, surely your mother/missus/son/daughter would appreciate that??
If there going to be a reduction in HATOs anyone wish to nominate a candidate…X factor style.
I’ve only had occasion to deal with HATOs twice and on both occasions appreciated what they did. Likewise the folks on the highways agency switchboard have been polite if not always accurate but hey when the brown stuff hits the fan…
extrucker:
.I think ACPO would object strongly as Police numbers are being cut and they will not be able to deal with the incidents we deal with.
Although i’d agree that we need HATO’s and has been said, they’re here to stay, i certainley wouldn’t be putting forward ACPO as any body of credibility. They’re a private limited company whose main purpose appears to be putting forwards ex police officers companies as the latest craze and cure all for crime reduction and public order control and all at lower costs !! Oh, and they’re unelected and unacountable too, did i mention i don’t like them either?
I say get rid of them now,why wait till 2012 ?
what did we do before they came on the scene■■? did the country come to a stand still when a truck broke down…NO!,
did the whole motorway network grind to a halt when a piece of wood was found in lane 3 … NO !
so why do we need them ■■? the simply answer is ‘we dont’!
2 men x £18,000pa in a £40,000 vehicle doing 25mpg,a total waste of public money.
welcome to the real world,go and get a proper job !!
p.s. and before you HATO’s come on here and say you earn more than £18,000,thats what is advertised on your web site and that includes night shift and weekend, public holiday working.
Why should anyone really care about running over a dead dog in the carriageway, a dead dog is a dead dog and as a dog lover I feel upset, but £8.00 per week for a 4x4 and uniformed driver is beyond remorse!

No one said they didn`t,
BUT,
99% or whatever in timewise attendance ,
HATO are on scene at an incident to Initially protect + preserve scene - Temporary Emergency Traffic Management, untill other services arrive to take over.
Bigger and better coning >>> Full Chapter 8 – takes a Minimum of 1 hour to start to implement and process to completion.
Who is kidding who ■■?
The first 20 minutes of something occuring is preservation expectancy.
Get off your high horse cheesey,
and get to learn what the HATO`s in the TOS service actually does for its mediocre measley £18 grand work all hols + overtime a year ya [zb]

Most of them seem to spend the time on an interweb forum trying to justify their job!

Before we came along the tyre fitters had to work without protection. I’m sure there was something else,oh yes that’s it. 2 coppers on £40.000 a year, that’s right £40.000 a year EACH as there is 2 in the car were sat on a motorway stopping anyone driving along the carriageway and investigating a death or 2. Oh and don’t forget the other 6 coppers on the same £40.000 a year sat on other on slips to stop people joining. Wonder why it took so long for a cop to attend anything else while they are sitting on a motorway for 5 hours.
It really is a show of how immature and Clarkson like people really are when they say we shut a motorway for a piece of wood in lane 3. And with truckers coming along at 56 and business men doing 90 in lanes 2 and 3, how exactly would you like me to collect said wood■■?. I wonder how the Police would deal with it, yes that’s right, they’d stop the traffic too. For the record I had a ladder in lane 2 last week and got it without inconveniencing anyone.
Get a proper job, ha ha ha. That must have taken some time to think up.

What would you then do with the multitude of recovery companys going bust putting loads of staff on the dole, AA/RAC dumping even more staff plus the loads of recovery trucks hitting the second hand market? Some of these companies have millions of £ invested in vehicles, kit and training to move and deal with anything they get tasked to quickly and safely.
You think there are delays now, imagine what your comments would be when you spotted an HA liveried recovery truck taking more than 3 seconds to deal with a breakdown or an RTC due to inexperience.
I know what you’ll say, HA can employ the out of work staff but that doesnt solve the problem of the recovery company principals being in debt for the rest of their lives trying to pay what they owe after the HA threw them off the motorway plus the court cases for breach of contract.

Running over a dead dog isnt the issue, the avoiding action of some drivers, sudden stamp on the brakes and the resulting RTC is.
There are changes in the pot for the organisation. There may be a move to reduce the fleet of 4x4’s and bring in a van of some type to deal with the incidents that may not need a 4x4. Nothing set in stone yet but watch this space. The problem is that if the wrong vehicle is deployed and a van arrives and is unable to move the damaged/broken down vehicle blocking the lanes then you will be on here complaining about the delays caused after we close the lanes to wait for a 4x4 to arrive. One of the reasons we have 4x4’s is because the Police dont have many anymore in a lot of areas so cant move anything.

Go back up the thread and you will see ive already said i will defend my organisation and if we are in the right i will say so and if we are in the wrong i will say so.
Ive just logged in to here after working from 0500 to about 1530, then doing a few errands, collecting the chinese for tea, eating it, taking the dogs out. Now i am sat down with a cuppa, reading stuff on the interweb and reading this sort of rubbish.
Shouldnt you be off driving, ■■■■■■■ in a car park or something instead of causing upset on an internerd forum??
HATO`s are just another product of the nanny state.
We were fine before them.
I can only see that they cause disruption to the flow of traffic for the most menial of things
If someone on the hard shoulder needs anything, then the responsibility should be with the driver stranded.
Obviously if a tyre changer needs to close down a lane, then the vehicle should be towed off the carriageway…Why should thousands be inconvenienced because of one driver and a flat tyre
And if it is cold/wet etc. and I am broken down, I would rather spend the time in the confines of my own vehicle with cab heater on, the actual risk of getting hit from behind is very small, I am willing to take that risk in the name of comfort, and besides, my very own guardian angel would ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ over any HATO any day of the week
That said, my only one dealing has been positive, they lack intelligence and imaginative thought, but they seem OK.

If the flat is on a steering axle? Gonna do a lot more damage than just a wrecked tyre. I’d rather give the tyre man a safe work space get the vehicle moving ASAP and every one go home in 1 piece at the end of the shift.
It isn’t hard to negotiate 100m of lane closure is it? Not for a pro driver.
