In light of the controversy surrounding a certain member taking images while driving, does anybody know of a suitable method or system that would allow picture taking on the move ?
A bloke I used to share the cab with had a video camera mounted on a bracket, press one button and start recording. no more distracting than turning the light on.
The last tour I did, the German bus driver had a mount for a video camera, much like a tom tom mount with a sucker on the glass, seemed very stable.
Jessups used to sell a bean-bag type of camera mount. Just the job for dropping down between your dash and windscreen. One of these would probably damp out vibration better than a sucker type of mount too.
I think Coffeeholic used one of these for his video camera, when he was making those brilliant videos posted on you-tube now. If you haven’t seen them, put Coffeeholic8 into their search, they should all come up.
You could also get a cable remote shutter release, if your camera has that facility. Have the remote draped in easy reach, so you can take a pic of whatever your camera’s pointing at whenever you like without compromising your, or anyone elses, safety.
Or a simple snap can still be taken with a mobile phone or a camera as it takes no more concentration than remembering where the traction control switch is, adjusting the cab temperature or dipping the headlamps.
There is a world of difference to having a conversation or texting while mobile to simply pressing one camera button. A rep or a truck driver having an argument with his planner, or in the middle of sealing a big deal at 50 mph will be soon down to 30mph and will drive 2 or 3 miles unaware of his dangerous actions.
You can get the little bean bag things from Poundland, far cheaper than Jessops.
I’ve got one of these remotes (£13 off Amazon) which I attach to the steering wheel with a bit of velcro, no worse than using the buttons for the stereo.
