Is QTR Transport anything to do with the fruit and veg company with the same livery and initials that used to trade in Reading back in the 60’s/70’s, it was owned by Peter White and I believe the QTR stood for Quick Turnover Reading? He ran an Austin FJK 100 five tonner and I used to work on it, it was later replaced with a Bedford TK longwheelbase dropsider. I have seen the vehicles all around Britain and often wondered if there was a connection.
I can recall a few Hampshire companies, John Stacey at Tadley who ran tippers and plant hire, J Bryanton who had several BMC FFK sixwheeled tippers on coal haulage, he was based at Mattingley, Jacmil transport from Hook who ran fish for J. Marr of Hull, Morris Singer and Haskins who had a BMC fleet and made garage doors based at Basingstoke, SCATS who were at Romsey (I think) and no doubt a few more will come to mind. No pics alas.
Pete.
Not quite Hampshire, but taken in the county,in the New Forest. From the Isle of Wight.

Hi “windrush” this is John Davies aka Buzzer of Davies International,Southampton.I was bred and born in Bramshaw in the New Forest which of course is in Hampshire, used to see a few Priddy motors around the town usually doing fruit and veg but did not realize they were now part of QTR of Reading, you are right with your assumption that this is the same company Qwick Turnover Reading, this i know as i met Paul White and his dad at Romsey show last year as we share the same hobby and passion which is horses and carriage driving and i asked what the QTR stood for.He had a state of the art horsebox with living and drag trailer built with no expense spared,i like his style but cant run to that for my transport which is a little leyland with trailer.Scats that you mentioned have a few agricultural based outlets in several counties across the south, hence they are in fact “southern counties agricultural trading society” cheerio for now Buzzer.

Hi John, thank you for clearing that up. I guessed as much, it would be 1975 since I left the area and they (the White’s) obviously decided to diversify into road haulage and seem to be doing very well! I did know what SCATS stood for but didn’t realise that they are still trading, my Dad used to be on grain lorries so we encountered them a lot in the 1960’s.
Pete.
Scats is now just a trading name for the shops, now part of a much larger group called openfield. The transport side is now run with dhl, enough said really!!

Priddys transport used to be an all Mercedes fleet before the QTR buyout,I can remember Robert buying a couple of FL10’s probably on R or S reg’s to wake Mercs up abit when they needed a jolt!Good firm never bought anything with a big engine till the Actros came, but knew the right time to get out of the job.
This will wake up some of the bulk lads, James Janaway,Whitchards,GB Foot,Snooks,C and C Stone,Whitewater Transport will think of some more soon.

Priddys Transport was my first job when I left school in about '99!!!
Not sure what my actual job was there as I couldn’t drive then but I did a bit of everything - sweeping/cleaning trailers, tidying the yard up/weeding/gardening, going out on runs with the drivers in everything from Roberts VW Transporter and LT vans, the Merc 7.5tonner upto the SK and Actros articsand a bit of warehouse work
Do you remember when Robert bought an accident “damaged” Actros with the twisted chassis and rebuilding it to go back on the road?
Wasn’t the FL10’s something to do with the Sainsburys contract?
DAF95XF,
That’s right on a P reg low cab gave Tony something to do. Wasn’t very old when it had the accident and I think Tony bought it when it came off the fleet for taking trailers for test and for self drive. It was a 350 I think and the start of his self drive fleet.
There was also an sk that was cannablised for spares that got put back together by an apprentice. That went on sainsburys just before the first wave of actros units that went in with auto boxes which none of the drivers used properly so the clutch pedals got cable ■■■■■■■.
The FL10’s went on sainsburys and if I remember correctly were bought to stir mercs up about some warranty claims. Things got a bit iffy for a period as some more new units had been ordered and mercs didn’t think that they would loose the fleet to Volvo but changed there tune when they saw them sign written in the yard.
