i feel quite embarresed to be asking this but is there any links anywhere to the use of a daf half splitter,i ve a couple of queries about it
Is it a range change box with splitter
its a 4 over 4 with a half splitter

A switch that gives each gear a high and low setting - viewtopic.php?f=5&t=36632&start=0
I take it you mean the normal DAF ZF sixteen speed. What would you like to know ?
when running empty i would assume that the splitter is not required? so with the range change down 2nd gear engaged you pull off, block change into 4th etc etc, would the splitter always be kept in the down pos?or the plitter is there central, high and low pos?

No mid position - and yes, you can go low 2 - low 4 - low 6? - low 7 - low 8 - high 8
Or high 3 - high 5 - high 6 - high 7 - high 8
All depends on how it is geared/power/surface incline etc

the reason im askin is believe it not i have a cat c+e but not yet drove one since passing in nov,and at the moment im on the rigid however a bit of ot is in the pipeline in the artic possibly.now on friday i was passenger in a unit running bob tail to drop me off at the dealers to pik my wagon up.now the guy driving the daf unit used every gear even though he had no trailer, just got me wondering about the gear arrangement in the daf.
another question if i may,you ve reached your max speed,on a flat surface would you sit in 8 high or 8 low?

You could easily get away with not using it, at least until you get to the highest gears.

There is only the up or down, high split or low split. If you find it easier to learn you could keep it down when empty, usually. Except of course when you get to over 40 + and certainly much beyond that you should flip to high split. Youâll have to experiment a little to know when the splits are needed. Use them to get the correct, and best revs to keep in the green and still pull etc.
You should find the gearbox pretty easy to learn and use and it is quite a forgiving box. Its IMHO the best box going.
many thanks,i think its a bit of hands on reqd
When you are empty leave it in high split (when you are in low split there is a green warning light on the dash) as you will have enough torque from the DAF engine to keep you âmoving onâ. One of our guys just uses 5 gears out of the 16 speed box (2 low, 4 low, 6 low, 8 low and then when he notices the engines revving itâs head off he changes to 8 high if he set off in low split
With a modern high torque engine you donât need a 16 speed gearbox (imho) the Swedes manual gearboxes manage with 12 gears and most of the autos in the MANs/Iveco/DAF (they share the same one) and the Volvo/Renault are 12 speed. (Ellies Dad is one of the Merc experts so PM him if you need any info) And the next DAF ZF manual gearbox will be 12 speed.
Have fun
