HA motorway "skid testing"

Saw it month or so back near Peterborough on a1m, yellow water tanker pouring water onto the road surface as it switched between different lanes flashing sign on back saying “skid testing”. Never seen this in action before so I’m curious how/what/why etc.

I’m guessing it’s not simply a case of the tanker driver looking in his rear mirror keeping tally how many vehicles spin out behind them! [emoji848][emoji6][emoji23]

Bit bored today so had a look around for ya mate! Page 41 is where it gets ‘really’ interesting but explains the 'how/why/what’s etc! tinyurl.com/y9d8kuu5

Seen the cops over here doing something similar after a fatal road crash.
They test the friction potential of the road surface as part of the investigation to rule out the condition as a factor by skidding a car over the piece of road and measure it with an accelerometer.

You did see right, it’s called SCRIM testing. Please don’t ask me what it stands for.
I’ve driven several types of these. You drive at a set speed and there’s a bloke next to you with all the tech gismo stuff recording the details that are being sent up from the equipment as you’re testing. On the side of the vehicle, mid way, is a small wheel with a slick tyre and loads of electronics attached, this records the quality of the road surface, reports are sent off to the people that look after the road, be it HA or local councils, they then decide wether or not it gets resurfaced. More often than not the reports are ignored.

The water is a constant flow to keep the tyre cool.

I did have pictures of the different wagons but can’t find them.

Found this for those that are interested;-

There’s a picture that shows you the little wheel that does the testing. It’s set at an angle and literally skids on the road surface.
