Hi ,does anybody have a link to the advice on correct use of vehicles for shunting in yards?
Thanks
I don’t think there is any. As long as it doesn’t touch the public highway it can be any old nail capable of doing the job driven by a capable person. I would imagine it would have to be in line with the companies h&s practices per entry/exit coupling etc, if said firm had procedures
Just get in the damned old nail and don’t be such a wuss
Or if the trailer is empty, just push the shunt button in and pick it up from the front with a forklift and push it back, that’s what I do, no unit required
It’s probably covered under this, not actually shunter specific though.

from above
The overall standard of vehicles used in workplaces should be at least as good as for public roads.
So I should imagine the the HSE would take a dim view of some old nail if they could show that an accident was down to it not being maintained properly.
It’s interesting to see the different policies which the different companies have. When you go to one RDC, you can see that the shunter will couple every susie to the trailer but when you go to another, they will just do the bare minimum. I suppose a lot of it comes down to common sense but having said that I’ve been to the one place which moves fully laden and heavy trailers with just the red air line connected and then moving the trailer at considerable speed.
As long as the vechile provided is suitable and sufficient, there are risk assessments done, for every vechile ,you are given written procedures there should be no problem.
Most companys will do this if they don,t and your not happy, speak up!
most yard shunters get stripped of the good parts and cannabalised leaving the yard shunter with no mirrors lights etc like what happened to the scania i drove at capper and co! It was a shed!
If your ignored ,make a note ,they usually say crack on!
