This picture appeared in a recent edition of Classic Commercials magazine. It shows a LHD sleeper-cab version of the Guy Big-J being exhibited at 1964 motor show. I’m surprised we didn’t see more of these on continental work. Robert

A couple more notable Guys here: one with the sleeper cab, and the other with a day cab but a ■■■■■■■ 14litre lump and a 9-speed Fuller. Robert

I wonder who tooted ,you must have good eyes, shall we say your trailer had a name on the same as a big mountain ?

Yes that was me Dan  , I remember when we had a yard full of Big J’s mainly ■■■■■■■ and Rolls powered, we also had some with 180 Gardners which everyone avoided like the plague as they would only do 58mph  How times change !

Classic shot as usual “moomooland” not another vehicle in sight, not even one of Mr.Toms !!! I wonder how old that Guy was at the time ? Cheers Bewick.

If its in 64 it could be up to 5 as that model was introduced in 59. That to my mind was a far better cab than the J more room in them and quite comfortable. Eddie.

Does anyone know if that left-■■■■■■ Big-J picture I posted earlier, ever went into production? We know that a few years down the line there were a few right-hookers with bigger-than-usual ■■■■■■■ 335s in them (RK Crisp and Pickfords spring to mind). I’d have thought that anyone going to the trouble of ordering a LHD Big-J would have afforded it the ■■■■■■■■■■■■■■ treatment…Any intelligence on this out there? Robert

Yes Dennis those were the days when the motorways were nice and quiet also notice no crash barrier of any description.

Have blown picture up but just cant make out the name it looks something like ‘CANNERS’

Any ideas?’

Am afraid it is just a blur as you say, although it looks like it could be from a “fleet” and is a nice tidy outfit the trailer is probably 24/26ft by the looks of it but this length was quite sufficient for 24 tons GVW and a lot more stable than a 4-in-line I think.Cheers Dennis.

That is one great shot ! I wonder what spec it was,Leyland 375/Turner 5 speed box/Eaton 2 speed ? BTC 4-in-line ? which looks to have a bit more overhang than was usual on those trailers, never the less I fancy my chances behind the wheel of that Gem ! 15ton one drop London (on pallets!).Oh! and those Guy’s had a radio and a shaver point eh! Happy Days Bewick.

Dennis, This 4 in line could be a York one, I pulled a one in 1966, Which looked about the same speck & overhang, Mind you I never saw many of these about made by York in that era, But I must say the Yorks had better brakes than the BTCs, IMO, Regards Larry.
