Hiya,
Larry, definitely not an eight pot Percy that low loader swan neck would shear
the back two pots off at the first corner.
thanks harry, long retired.
…and it hasn’t got the front extension to the cab to accommodate the additional length of the 8 pot Percy!

I haven’t been on this thread for a bit, just wondered if the elusive photo/photos of back end of a Big J with 240 Gardner have turned up yet?

Would save me trawling through the pages…
Someone has actually built one- yes, a real one- and photographed it.
Someone has obtained documentary evidence that some were built. He has also been quoted a sum in the region of fifty pounds for a build sheet from the factory, although none of us has stumped up a penny.
It’s all in there.

Maybe Dennis would pay for it if asked nicely…just a thought.

That’s the one, it wasn’t successful as the rest of the drive train couldn’t cope with the “power” of the big Percy. However it did drive out of the factory with an 8LXB under the cab and therefore it’s the real deal.

It is to be regretted that that Smith bloke requires a photo to prove the existence, whether you state it as such or not.
David, I think even Mr D Smith of Kendal accepted the Baker’s Big J as the real thing. Although now he’s in his twilight years he gets a bit forgetful and is prone to cantankerous episodes, bless him…
They were nicknamed by some as a ‘Percy’ due to the famous TV gardener at the time, Percy Thrower. Perhaps it goes some way to explaining how tenuous the link is by the obvious discrepency in spelling…

350 ■■■■■■■ the 290 ■■■■■■■ and the 280 rolls royce…■■?

only 180 ■■■■■■■ was around in 1966 so id say this unit is only a av505 aec engine…thats about it

John, I’ve no idea, but that’s what the man that drove the lorry told me.
