Has anyone ever built one, sold one when new, repaired one,DRIVEN one,or at least seen one or possibly got a photo (side view) showing the 8 potter sticking out the rear of the cab .

Phew! it’s been [zb] hot where I’ve been the last couple of weeks, top 30’s and touching 40 some days and it looks like it’s getting hotter on this thread since I’ve been away phew! Still no side view shots (or any shots for that matter) and those build sheets could have just been forward projections in any case prior to them been kicked into touch by Leyland eh!  !! Cheers Bewick.

Same crap different day. VALKYRIE has proved they existed as a lot of us already knew.
Cheers Dave.

While you went off lazing around your allies had to surrender or at least sign an armistice even though we know that the enemy might be using dodgy methods. :smiling_imp:   On that note the engine numbers still seem to be missing so all might not be lost.Although I’d put the chances as less than those of the Kaiser.

Do I sniff a new thread starting here Robert ? I had my first three new Atki Borderers fitted with Kysor shutters but then I moved onto Dynair fans for the next ones which I thought were a better fitment. Cheers Bewick.

Well seeing as it’s taken over 5 and a half years to come up with written proof though unfortunately not with the required side view of a Big J 240 LXB I think the thread has had a good run and given a lot of TNUK members a great “bone” to chew on I don’t believe those of us who continued to question wether a Big J with that engine ever existed ! And “Valkery” must be applauded for putting his money down to prove a point !! well done that man I say  But this is surely something that could have been done yonks ago, but hey! we would have missed all the slaver and carping wouldn’t we ?  :open_mouth:     Bewick.

Now then “CF” I go to Syria for a fortnight to get the Russians fired up and you go and ■■■■■■■ surrender you spineless ■■■■■ what chance have we got when I leave you in charge of the “key board” for a couple of weeks eh! no ■■■■■■■ chance that’s what.  :open_mouth: :unamused:     Cheers, no I’m as sick as a ■■■■■■■ parrot I really am.

I must be really dense, (yeah, I know, I only drove a tipper), as I thought the engine number’s were listed on Valkyries spec sheet on the right hand side under a heading marked ENGINE NUMBERS? Surely a cross reference with Gardner’s manufacturing production is possible?

Regarding the lack of a side pic, plenty of short production run vehicles were camera shy.

Pete.

Have no fear Bewick! I was thinking of the roof-mounted air-con units. Robert

Oh! You mean those LHD ones with the NTC 335s in - woops!
(Shush, you’re supposed to keep quiet about those!).
But there’s a thread about them, I started it.
(Gawd, don’t start them all off again: they’ll nip down the Tipper’s Arms for a bevvy and straight round to your thread with pick-axes, shovels and anything they can get their hands on!).
I’ll get me coat.

Thank you for coming ladies and gentlemen, we hope you have enjoyed the show.
So thank you all once more, have a safe journey home, Dennis has now left the building
Regards. John.

While in no way wishing to jeopardise the terms of the armistice the last column on the right of the information sheet only shows wheelbase measurement at least on my screen. :open_mouth: :smiling_imp:

I’m sure that Bewick can put that right ‘if’ they are there because if anyone can recognise a Gardner engine number, let alone 29 of them, when he sees it he can. :smiling_imp:

Good to see that the Bewick is no longer mute!

Wouldn’t like it to have been his swan song (Ok, I’ll quit while I’m behind)

Then you need a larger screen CF! On mine it shows the wheelbase, and then engine numbers and date either manufactured or supplied.

Thanks windrush.I was just taking the pic as posted at face value but then clicked on it which shows the full sheet. It just needs a Gardner expert now to explain if those numbers contain any identifier which seperates 6 cylinder from 8 cylinder. If not it seems like Gardner had a mad engine id system.

Well - I might as well put in my findings as regards engine numbers.

We sold a Seddon 32/4 in October 1973 with a 6lxb, engine number 190630. Right in the middle of those 1973 numbers.
The 180’s were mostly 182… to 188… but in1974 they started to appear as 183/ or 184/■■?(stroke and 4 digits). Maybe this just applied to Seddon and later Seddon Atkinson.

So, as regards that list, they could all be 6lxb’s, or not.
I suggest the need of a photo.

Lights blue touchpaper and retires to a safe distance.

Well I have a book on the history of Gardner Engines which no doubt a number of the lads on the site have also, and I will dig it out and have another “butchers” at. But I recall quite clearly the former M.D. of Atkinson Lorries PTY of South Africa telling me in the early 70’s that Gardners advised the number of “pistons” that a particular manufacturer had been allocated and then said manufacturer ordered their engines in any configuration they wanted i.e. so many 100’s,so many 120’s,150’s,180’s and 240’s,and IIRC the book doesn’t list the differn’t engines by cylinder no.,just the number of engines delivered to each manufacturer. Although “Walton man” might be on to something I honestly cannot see SOM ordering a load of 180LXB’s when the GVW dropped to 30:5 tons at 6 BHP per ton which came in during 1973. SOM were “full wack” operators at 32 tons GVW and ■■■■■■■ was their main engine ! However, still no photographic evidence and their seems to be a major discrepancy in the actual numbers supplied, very strange! And the thread rolls on       Cheers Bewick.
