What was lurking under the big cab?

I’ve never seen those before. I reckon they are dustcart cabs- they are based on the narrower version of the cab, rather than the one fitted to Crusaders and ERF Europeans. Was there a picture of a Seddon with a similar roof posted on here in the past few years? They seem to be on long wheelbases, suggesting that they were specified like that from the factory. The owner must have loved his Big J’s- by late 1975 there were loads of “standard” vehicles available with big cabs, albeit without the ice cream/refuse top.

This one?

That is the type, I think. There is a similar one on page 5 of this thread, in Jameson’s livery. Maybe these were the “standard” Seddon sleeper. Guys seem to have pigeon lofts, except those big ones above. I wonder where all these Motor Panels sleeper conversions originated- in the factory, or a network of coachbuilders?

Our ■■■■■■■■ correspondant has gone rather quiet of late, possibly concerned that folk now know that his stockpile really exists?

Pete.

He’s far to busy eating his tea Pete.

Very good that Rob! Never fear, he will be busily building a case up denying that he ever doubted their existence and I feel certain that we haven’t heard the last from him on this topic! Probably just jealous that he couldn’t get his mitts on one whereas another haulier obviously obtained 20+!

Pete.

I noticed that Bewick was last logged in on Sunday morning. He could be away or ill. But he will be back with reasons to argue the case.

Cheers Dave.

He’ll just be sulking because his fireworks are as wet as an otter’s pocket now that they’ve been ■■■■■■ on from a great height.

In Bewick’s absense:

Has anyone considered the idea that Valkyrie’s scans may be forgeries? I would want to see the documents that the Leyland Museum people were reading, to create that list.

:open_mouth:

Blimey.

As some would say the thick plottens.

Time to declare neutrality and let Bewick and H sort out the questions. :smiling_imp:

Yes, being an old cynic this possibility did occur to me. Then I reflected that this forum spends an astonishing amount of energy on genuine research for the pleasure of other TNUK users. It would be a very rare bird indeed who would fly in the face of this goodwill and run a spoof research just for a cheap laugh. Anywhere else he might get that cheap laugh if found out, but on this forum he’d simply fall flat on his face and lose all his credibility for good. So I am choosing to accept it in good faith, though a little more evidence from primary, rather than secondary sources wouldn’t go amiss! Robert

It doesn’t actually say on the list what engines are fitted to the vehicles listed only a poorly written note which mentions Big J’s with 8LXB engines and still no photographic proof!

Hi Frankydobo, As you daid still no proof,Sureley someone must have a photo or two to solve this ongoing saga, I suppose we can all live in hope, Ha Ha, Regards Larry.

In my now totally neutral observations according to the description in the post it says ‘engine numbers’ and chassis numbers but the engine numbers seem to be missing against the list of chassis numbers.

All we need now is for some idiot to suggest that the missing engine numbers indicate that Commer TS3s were fitted. :unamused:

If anyone wants to prove a factory built engine and chassis package they generally have to provide evidence of matching engine and chassis numbers at the factory build stage.Which in this case obviously ‘shouldn’t’ be a problem from the records available. :bulb:

I second this, in the spirit of neutrality.

Now we are on to something. Guy Motors will have had factory build cards for each and every vehicle produced. Unless they were dumped in a skip decades ago, these build cards may still exist. Robert

Probably set alight and stuffed in the air intakes of all those 240s on cold winter mornings at Fallings Park!

According to the ‘evidence’ provided the engine numbers ‘should’ be with the chassis numbers. In which case the historic commercials museum ‘should’ have the relevant info we need to match the right  ( or wrong  ) engines to the chassis. :bulb:

Are we sure that the straight 8 would fit in a 9 ft 6 ins wheelbase? It certainly didn’t in Seddatk 400’s, unlike their normal day cab 9’ft 6 wheelbase, if you had an 8lxb you got the sleeper wheelbase of 10ft 3 ins, regardless of cab type, same on B series ERFs I think. That said as I put many pages ago, I definitely saw an 8lxb guy in Barrow in the mid 80’s. It was M reg and getting on a bit. What it did have was a plain red cab, some would call it signal red, so clearly this unit was undergoing a secret test run courtesy of an anonymous haulier from not too many miles east.

Now we need to know a) how much of the engine’s ( around 6 foot ? ) length sat ahead of the front axle centre line,b the length of the fuller box and bell housing assembly from engine back plate to gearbox output flange, and c drive axle prop shaft flange position relative to the axle centre line. :bulb:
