One of the best tv comedians the country has ever had, way ahead of his time, the Bovver Boy and the vicar was pure comedy gold, he would be hitting out with 20 million or more viewers on a Saturday night peak viewing time, at that time it could have been half the population of the UK were watching his tv shows.

Nope. The 15-sp is five-over-five-over-five (the bottom range being a deep reduction set for off-road / crawler use).

Ah so i’ve learnt something … not to assume

Just to clear the air before Carryfast chimes in.
A 15 is like a 10 with five deep reduction gears below the normal 10.
The top two gears in deep reduction are duplicated with the bottom two of low range.
An 18 is like a 13 but the low box can also be split.
Grumpy, if you’re familiar with a nine speed, you’d love a 13. It’s a nine speed that you can split the top four.

Yep.An oddball 15 speed range change box, low, mid and high range.Low range controlled by a separate switch.
But only two of the low range ratios don’t clash/duplicate with those of the mid range.
If only Fuller knew how to describe their own product.It would stop a lot of mistaken identity of the low range being a splitter.

It’s not rocket science.The 18 speed is like the 13 speed but the splitter works on both ranges not just one range.
Someone asked about the Foden box.Which was similar to the 13 speed Fuller but with one three way switch not a separate range change and splitter switch.
If I’ve got it right AEC ‘trucks’ division said we know that we need a better ‘truck’ engine design than the 760, but let’s spend the cash on an even worse V8 ‘truck engine’ design instead.
But which might work in any unknown application other than a ‘truck’.

It’s not rocket science because SDU’s explained how those gearboxes work.Obviously Leatherhead council Carryfast the parcel company and of course the fire engine company where you washed the finished articles would all have used these boxes so you would need no introduction.
The V8 project began before the 760 was built so you need to go back and try , it won’t be easy , to educate yourself by reading the thread

He doesn’t know the difference between an Eaton Splitter and an Eton Mess.

The Twin-splitter was a twelve speed box with three splitter positions at every corner of the H-pattern

My first experience of driving a lorry with an Eaton T/S was an ERF, the only other was an Iveco Eurotech. I have tried to explain such gearboxes to my eldest son who has been driving for roughly 6 years and he still cant seem to grasp the concept but i think he will get it it before a certain person from Surrey. I drove with Twin-splitters in both ERF and Iveco. As much as l like ERFs I thought the installation was far better in the Iveco (Eurostar). It was also really superb in the MAN F9 but crap in the SA Strato.

I’d bet that a Crow at least would be laughing at the idea of turbocharging an AEC V8 or using two seperate switches for a 15 speed range change box and then calling it a 10 speed as an excuse.
But can it read a tape measure to find out if the 8LXB and Fuller will fit in a BigJ unit.

There’s no argument.Except by my, now enlightened, description it’s a 15 speed, range change box, configured in three ranges of 5.
By definition it ain’t a 10 speed box in any way shape or form.
The description of low range and ‘deep reduction’, instead of being described as the low range of the three ranges, is a red herring.
Which combined with the seperate switch is enough to confuse many.Including those in its homeland let alone a Brit who’s never seen one let alone driven it.
Bearing in mind that effectively not all the gears in the low range are any different to the mid range anyway.
It’s an oddball which may have its uses in getting a seriously heavy truck rolling or ploughing through soft ground.
Any better in the real world than the lowest gears including crawler, of a 9 speed or 13 speed, who knows.But do know that some heavy haulage applications use a manual box with a torque converter rather than a clutch.

I’ve posted this which tells a different story.Regarding something, that wasn’t fit for the purpose, of powering a truck, for which it was designed from the outset and which obviously took resources needed to develop something that would have been.
If they could cast a totally new block and heads for a flawed V8 then they could have made a proper truck engine of the 760 by a redesign of its block far more cheaply and easily.
Instead of which the V8 screamer is predictably overloading its rod end bearings let’s bolt a turbocharger to it that’ll fix it.

Now for those measurements of a BigJ tractor unit’s radiator to diff input flange and 8 LXB and 9 speed Fuller cooling fan to transmission output flange + prop shaft.

I saw CF in the printing shop buying some ink and overhead the conversation that he had ran out of ink on his computer and couldn’t write anything until he got home in the Austin Allegro Vandem Plas luxury model with a square steering wheel.

Ironically I think that it would probably have been possible to control both the 13 speed and the 15 speed with a single 3 way switch.Don’t think it would have been mutually exclusive with the 15 speed range change or the 13 speed range change with splitter hybrid.
Like the Foden box from memory.
The two separate switches only really become necessary with more than three sets of different gear trains like 4 over 4 range change + splitter control required on both ranges.Similar to the 18 speed or the 16 speed euro synchros.
Or perish the thought a 4 over 4 over 4 over 4 16 speed range change.
Given the choice I preferred to have more gears controlled by the stick and a splitter like the 12 speed ZF in the 2800.
