GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

Is that the one that is a re-engined job?

Oh ! now that is interesting “LL” I wonder if it is one of the 49 that SOM took delivery of back in the 70’s ! Cheers Dennis. :+1:

His timing of revs v clutch and gearshifts needs more practice. His legs and feet ain’t working in time with his left arm.
The downshift at 1.57 seemed to be against an idling engine ? then he just rev matched the clutch on engagement like a bad synchro downshift..
Rather than the nice distinctive two separate rev matches for gears in neutral then another for re engagement of the clutch.
Upshifts clearly too early engaging clutch in neutral before the revs a fallen, defeating the object of the double de clutched shift.

I dunno. I thought the same, but it appeared to me that the overtakee held his speed and appeared to be gaining on the overtaker and it was not until quite late that he dropped back and let the overtaker in. Given that these are are clearly vintage lorries, it appeared to me a churlish move to try and race an overtaker. However, the person filming it on his camera provided a foreshortening effect that made it really difficult to see whether the overtakee was in fact blocking the overtaker. If I’d been driving the AEC in the outside lane, I might well have been reluctant to observe the courtesy flick of the indicator. Discuss!

I think it’s mandatory, like saying thank you to someone who held a door open for you.

Absolutely brilliant.
Thank you for that very informative post, keep 'em coming.
And all you lads who think you know how to handle a lorry…PAY ATTENTION.
We are indebted to Mr Carryfast for freely and without prejudice imparting his knowledge and experience to us mere plebs.
I don’t know how the hell I managed for 50 ish years, hell, I even tamed a Scammell gearbox ‘gate change’.
Just one point Mr Carryfast, could you ‘educate’ me re Fodens 12 speed box because I’m ashamed to say I never did manage to master it. Thank you in advance.

I think it was actually meant to be a ‘comparison’ between the two trucks.

That was a total restoration of a V8 Mandator by the Mayles. Not sure if it’s the one they put a Fuller in later. They have a ‘Tin Front’ Mandator ballast tractor too which is as close as they could get to the one their dad drove for a local company. It was a heavy haulage motor coupled to a dolly and a forty foot trailer with a machine on the back.Watch him reverse that and also change gear on a run.Just thinking that the Mandator video is newer than the V8 video so maybe Lord CF gave him some instructions on how to master an AEC box with a bus engine. Put your hands up all who have never missed a gear and go to the top of the class

Carryfast is going to be very lonly up there.

Gingerfold mentioned on here that another V8 Mandator was fully restored and apparently it was the best he had seen .This was a few years ago he said it was virtually perfect but wasn’t allowed to post photos of it or who had done the work.I’m pretty certain it was the Mayles and i also have a sneaking feeling that one of them was on here under the name ERF.He eventually withdrew from posting here due to someone who constantly contradicted everything he said without foundation. Not so long after Gingerfold left for similar reasons. Two great losses

The bloke who doesn’t know the difference between a range change and splitter?
The bloke who argued with other fellows, myself included, who have intimate knowledge of and experience with 15 speed RoadRangers, stating that we were doing it wrong?
The bloke who has never seen an 18 speed?
The bloke who is a legend in his own bathwater?

This is a guy who can multi-task though. He can destroy two threads at the same time - you want to read him on the “Busy Mr Trump” thread. Completely barking mad.

Sorry for hijacking this thread back to the subject.Does Dennis believe there were original GUYs with 240 Gardners and why didn’t he order 335 Cummins in the ones he ran instead of the 180 Gardners😁

To get back onto what gearbox would have been behind a factory 8LXB in a GUY , I’d guess by choice a Fuller RTO 9509A with a possible option of an 8 speed range change David Brown 08 750 David Browns 06 600 would need to have the Gardner de rated to cope with the input torque.

Wouldn’t they put the same box Foden ERF and Atkinson used in there’s at a guess a Fuller?

Yes The Fuller Roadranger 9509 would be the standard option for those makes for similar horsepower engines. Chart shows the gearsets available The RT O indicates an overdrive gearbox and the Suffix A or B denotes close or wide ratio box The 950 indicates input torque in lbft

Fuller RT(O)
Rev Lo Rev Hi 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9
RT-9509A 12.37 3.87 11.83 7.9 5.79 4.32 3.2 2.47 1.81 1.35 1.00
RT-9509A 9.17 2.86 8.77 5.85 4.29 3.2 2.37 1.83 1.34 1.00 0.74
RT-9509B 12.87 3.43 12.31 7.74 5.19 3.76 2.75 1.97 1.38 1.00 0.73

The comments were directed at the ‘driver’ of the AEC who Ro also seemed to be referring to.No plebs were mentioned.
As for the Foden box the DoT actually retro fitted it’s whole fleet of Foden S83 gritters with 9 speed RTO Fullers because their road digger ‘drivers’ couldn’t handle the Foden box.
As for me from memory I just treated it as a sort of a cross between a 13 speed Fuller and an Eaton Twin Split having never even driven the latter.
Or maybe even a 15 speed range change Fuller with one three way switch not two separate ones and changing one of its 3 ranges with the splitter that it arguably should have had like the 13 speed.
In all cases getting the revs v shift timings right obviously helps and the S83 was quicker, with more correct ratios where they were needed, with the Foden box, than with the 9 speed Fuller.
Thats a polite way of saying I preferred the Foden box to the 9 speed Fuller at least while we had them.

Actually stated that the 15 speed was being described wrong by whoever.Which as it turned out was caused by the combination of the factory not calling it a 15 speed range change box and the resulting confusion by many of those who have driven it bearing in mind the two separate switch controls.
So how many range changes have three ranges, using two separate switches and call the mid range low range ?.
If you think that he’s driving the AEC box right fine.

The downshifting on the approach the roundabout and the upshifts don’t fit the definition of a missed gear.

He actually took irrational offence at the suggestion that the design of the V8 and to a lesser extent all AEC engines was compromised.
Remind me why the V8 was taken out of production in the Mandatory and replaced by the 760.
Also how long the TL12 survived in the T45 before being dropped ?.
