Surely there must still be someone living in the Wolverhampton area that worked at Guy Motors and could act as an honest broker and bring this thread to a merciful close by giving us the comprehensive “gen” on this elusive “beast”. Trev seems to have conveiniently disappeared at this most important juncture!!! Cheers Dennis.
When fitted with V engines, ■■■■■■■ V6 or Perkins V8 the Big J cab had a completely flat floor and was more driver friendly than the big hump of a bonnet. The ■■■■■■■ V6 was soon dropped as it was not popular but the Perkins V8 went on till about 1973 as a 28t unit.
If i remember SOM had a depot at Stockton the red and cream Gardner greater piston guy big j could
be observed on the A19 in the late hours before returning to hide.
i can remember one passing SJR 450G on the A19 around the Norton billingham turn off
going north bound. just another sighting of this slippery vehicle back in the 1970`s.

The G reg you observed definitely was not an 8LXB Big J,the darkness can play tricks on the eyesight, are you sure it wasn’t an SOM TK flat you “clocked”? Cheers Bewick.
hiya,
Have on the odd occasion seen a 12 pot Percy when peering into the engine compartment early AM but this was usually induced by a little too much lubricant forced down my neck the night before but it never extended out of the back of the shed and diminished in size after an hour or two and a full English, why oh why did I never own a camera we could close this lot here and now.
thanks harry long retired.

Evening all, well were off again are we? Is there room for a little one inside? I can get us some cracking motors, for the International I could find some nice Bussings, for the UK they will have to be big power, but light, so I expect there is no choice Seddon, Rolls Royce seems about right, oh dear I didnt pass the interview!! Ive finished our last bit of drilling tonight, but the ground is so dry, 25acres of “Timothy” that I drilled over a month ago has still not germinated, and that normally is a strong grass! Came in for tea, announced to my Managing Director, (41years this month), "Im going to get a proper computer, that can handle photographs" To which came the reply, "I have been waiting two years for you to put up the Greenhouse you bought me"!! So I have a little more work to do before I can (try), putting up some of my photographs. First one will be my shot of the Smith of Maddiston Highway, behind PWG48M, which I have noted as a "240 Big J ". Doesnt any one from the Black Country have a photograph, or details of Brian Orchards Big J 8LXB?? Dennis, you know the thing that bugs me, over all the years that I knew Hulme Robertson, (J&A Smiths fleet engineer), I cannot recollect him waxing lyrical about 240s, and he was an incredibly clever Gardner man!! Smiths must have been one of the biggest “hire and reward” ■■■■■■■ users in the UK, but I do know that they had some Gardners on the fleet. Wonder if we will ever get a rear cab shot?? Ive just found a photograph of a Scania LB76, retro fitted with a 180 Gardner, (Trev H will know this one), Cheerio, off to give the Bollinger a bending, I think I`ve earned it, (anyone who has sat on a John Deere seat for 12hours knows what I mean)!
I refer you back to Saviem’s post Dennis
Cheers Dave.
