Aye,I’ll keep my elbow in to-night when I’m in the pit Dave otherwise it might get knocked off when one of the SOM’s ■■■■■■■ 220’s fly’s past at 2 a.m. in the morning!!! Cheers Dennis.
A “rose” between two Thorns if ever there was!!
In the1970`s Waughs did quite a lot of work out of Alcans lynemouth smelter used to load the trailers to run down to follingsby freightliner rail head,
Freightliner used a lot of Guy motors and used to load for the rail head as well any how George and i are loading trailers
with SJR 450G this Freightliner driver turns up and what this noise i hear the old ears prick up.
This is strange i thought walks over to have a look and its a Straight Eight in it so i ask the driver whats the crack with this then, he replies its a test vehicle from Guy motors to see if its any good.
but no photo though.

Its a very interesting thread this quest for photographic evidence of a “rear of cab” shot of a Big J that is powered by the ledgendary Gardner 8LXB. But as I have said in an earlier post,at the time this engine appeared in '71 the demand for it from the three main users of Gardners,Foden,ERF and Atkinson, was so great that orders far outstripped demand by a country mile! Therefore the chances of Leyland owned Guy getting a “sniff” were somewhat remote, let alone having one to send out on demo to Freightliners which had they been inclined to place an order would have had no chance of ever having said order fulfilled! And anyway Freightliner only seemed to buy what ever was the cheapest 32 tonner on offer at any given time and being mainly short haulers this type of cheap tractor was probably quite adequate for them and,of course, any chassis with an 8LXB in it commanded a premium of £12/1300 over that of the ■■■■■■■ 205/220 and the smaller 180LXB.And then of course we have an ex SOM driver claiming that they had nothing else but Big J 8LXB’s at Maddiston at one time! After all these years it is a case of being able to seperate Fact from Fiction and for sure there has been more of the latter than the former on this thread!!! Keep up the good work lads we’ll crack it one day!! Cheers Dennis.

Not strictly correct Dennis,Manchester SoM had 2 or 3 Big J 240’s,the remained of the 39 were distributed between all the other depot’s,however, the other ■■■■■■■ and smaller Percies far out numbered the 240 powered Guy’s.
Just to keep things factual, you’ll understand!
Take it easy,

Just like the racehorse whip debate, you can always keep us “motivated” Dennis!!
Take it even easier,

Now you are jesting Dave—aren’t you? I’d need a Lion tamers chair and whip to get some of these lads licked back into shape!! not to mention having to put a stick of dynamite under their pit’s to get them out for a decent day’s collar!!! I’m thinking particularly of messrs. Gill,Webb,Trotter and Fergie oh! and I’d have DtR doing a shift in’th office he’s got the CPC,any problems with any of them and he could knock on my door for help!! I am sure I could still remember a few choice expletives to serenade their “lug 'oles” !! Cheers Dennis.
