hiya,
And yes all food and booze delivered to the afore mentioned establishments delivered by Guy big J8LXB powered tranportation,
tell you what you’ll bleedin starve awaiting their kitchens to be serviced unless of course SOM have resurrected themselves, Dennis just nip out for a bag of chips while your waiting, It’ll have to be a big-un, these "special Big Js"seem very thin on the ground, they don’t seem to bother turning up do they.
thanks harry long retired.

Your gonna set the ball rolling again “H” if your not careful! Shhhhh listen----- I can hear the drums starting to beat in deepest Radnorshire!!! Did you want salt, vinegar AND HP sauce on your chips “H”,and I’ll make sure they are wrapped in a final edition of NOtW!! What Sunday paper are going to order now “H” now that the well ordered world we grew up in has been turned upside down and robbed of the “Whores Gazette” ? Cheers Dennis.

Why would Harry want to read about rowing :unamused: at his age
cheers Johnnie :stuck_out_tongue:

As peace now decends on the “Gill” household this next Sunday morning it is a sad sight to see the head of the house(well thats what “H”'s missus said he could be referred to) the old lad is slumped in his chair twiddling his thumbs, that barsteward Murdoch has some answering to do if “H” ever comes across him on his periodic jaunts to the “Smoke”!! Staff reporter.

hiya,
Don’t ever remember doing much rowing never got to Cambridge or Oxford so a spot on the race team never happened, but come to think of it I have been accused of being up the Orinoko without a paddle on many occasions, also once when a little fellah tried rowing across the nearby mill lodge in an old bath the lump of plastacine i used to bung the drain hole up blew out when mid stream and I sunk in 12 feet of water and not “contrary to rumour” being able to walk on water had to swim about fifty feet to the bank fully clothed got a paddle at that time across the backside and a canny spell of grounding thrown in, maybe I should have joined the navy it did seem I was a bit fond of the aqua.

Haulage/General Dealers, that covers a multi-tude of sins!

Hello Gentlemen, UFD447G, thats a Dudley Registration, was she one of Graham Knowles (G&K) motors? Trev H, what do you think? 8LXB Big J, well if Guy had 40 engines, and Smiths had 39, then Brian Orchards Sedgley Steels of Tipton, 8LXB Big J must have been number 40! They ran her from new, and when her days were done she was swopped for a B Series ERF, 180 lxb, I understand the driver was not impressed!!! The late Hulme Robertson, who I got to know quite well, and was Smiths Fleet Engineer, was a wizard with Gardner pumps, (as many a Leith fishing boat skipper would testify)! and somewhere I know I have a note in an old diary about 240LXB Guys, which I will look for, but my dealings with Smiths were more concerned with their Highway Trailers, rather than tractors. Cheerio for now.

Hi Saviem,
Number 40 was bought by an oil company in Scotland, who disposed of it after six months.M A Evans of Knighton Radnorshire then purchased it off Chaddesley Commercials of Kidderminster and ran it until they scrapped it.
Cheers Dave.

And as the Guy thread surges into life once more we are immediately plunged into dis-array once more by the un-timely intervention of “Saviem”!!! The question now is------was there,in fact,41 8LXB Big Js?That G reg Big J would not have been an 8LXB machine, too early!. However,do I detect the makings of another interesting thread? Highway Trailers! C’mon Saviem don’t poke your pointed stick into the Big J cage, you will most definitely regret it if you do!! Now Highway Trailers,ah! pastures anew!! Cheers Dennis.

Hello Dave, gets a bigger and bigger mystery does it not? Too much for this old chap, somewhere I have the registration number of Brian Orchards Big J, I will try to find it out, but it is a long time ago. So, the question now is, just how many 8LXB Big Js came from Fallings Park, and before I get a rollicking Dennis B, it was a Big J,and not a Seddon, I did not wear spectacles in those days!! Cheerio, a glass of Bollinger, and then bed. I must not dream of Guys!!

C’mon Dennis, don’t try and divert Saviem off the Big J thread because you are frightened he will come up with the evidence that proves beyond doubt that the 8LXB Big J did exist.
Cheers Dave.

“Saviem” will soon find out the meaning of the words “flogging a dead horse” but then again he may be “the eternal optomist”( well he must have been if his former day job was selling those french motors!!) cheers Dennis.

…not a 240 B/Guy,the grille is not the extended type, which was required to accomodate the 240

However,I do have definitive proof of a Gardner being fitted to a Jaguar XK 150 car!

David :unamused:

Don’t change the subject David we are looking for a shot of a Guy Big J with 8LXB!!! Dennis.

I think we must be in the same Euro syndicate “H” Cheers Dennis.

Evening Gentlemen, as I make my way, gingerly, into what I now realise is a “bear pit” of a thread. Well its been one of those “difficult” days, contractors due to turn up at 0700, never arrived, but our Farrier, fresh from the Calgary Stampead did, bang on 20.00, and guess what, his charges have gone up. Dennis, I have always been an optomist, glass at least half full! So this morning Instead of doing what I should have been doing I went looking for any evidence that I may have filed away years ago. Is it not amazing what we keep? I found a rear Polaroid shot of a Smith Highway Super Lightweight, (very much the worse for wear), behind a Big J, no you cannot see the back of the cab at engine hight, the trailer reg plate looks to be PWG48M, (but it is not clear). My file note refers to points about construction of the trailer, and its condition, followed by the comment, “behind 240 Big J” Gentlemen, its not much in terms of evidence is it ■■ and I expect I will collect some flak for being so presumtious as to enter these hallowed portals with such flimsy evidence, still it never meant anything to me at the time, but it is all I can offer in support that these tractors existed. Perhaps someone more skilled in the use of these electronic boxes than I, could gain more concrete evidence from the registration. (that is if I have interpreted it correctly from a rather battered Polaroid). Whippy little trailers those Superlightweights, and bouncy with those big balloon tyres, but oh so light at 32tons. I always rated Highways coil carriers as the best, and their standard platforms were real quality, (especially when they carried one of Gerald Broadbents original Tautliners) now there is a piece of kit really worth preserving! Real trip down memory lane going into the old files, found an old photograph of "Saviem, sitting in the cab of a 1960s Willeme LD610 35tonne tractor which had a Willeme 518T8 18litre straight 8cylinder engine, 225cv @1800rpm, I can still remember the feel and magic sound that it made. Sorry, gone off thread, tin hats on now, retreating to Bollinger,… and sleep. Cheerio for now.

Saviem:

:open_mouth:  They probably would have fitted one of those in a Big J too if enough alcohol had been consumed first.

for those in the know, where does PWG registration eminate from, its seems vaguely familiar as Scottish,[maybe SoM]?
