I can say catergorically that during the '70s when the 8LXB would have been fitted in the Big J,I was neither offered one,new or 2nd hand, nor can I recall seeing one for sale!I was once offered a Seddon 32/4 with the de-rated 200BHP 8 LXB but the price being asked for the 2 Y.O. motor was a bit “too tasty” for how I valued it,and besides I couldn’t see the point as a 220 ■■■■■■■ would walk all over the de-rated Seddon ,and cheaper into the bargain!! Dennis.

now Berwick i think you need to admit defeat here like i said before my dad was a SOM driver for number of years and was allocated fleet number ND888 guy big j4 from new i have even quotet the reg number in a previous post he may be 72 yrs old but his memory is as sharp as a tack if you wish i could get him to quote all the fleet numbers and reg numbers and even who drove what waggonno disrespect to an old hand in the road haulage industry but i really feel you should accept that they did exist and have some dignity in defeat
cheers john
Hiya John, how you going? It’s BEWICK! Berwick is the last town in England before you enter the “land of milk and honey”! I have never said that there is, or was, no such motor as a Big J 8LXB!!! I only asked had anyone driven one, worked on one or ,in fact got a Photo of one!!Considering the number which, its claimed, have been built(which I would have reservations about) I find it un-believable that in over 12 months no-one has produced a photo or a factory sales spec sheet that mentions an 8LXB powered Big J.Alas this is misconstrued as me suggesting there was no such motor, which of course I certainly am not! Nothing would please me more than to see an SOM Big J with the Big G sticking out the back of the cab!!! However,it is you and the the other lads that have failed to “produce the goods”,I only posed the question! And have had to endure the castigating!!! No problem there though, because if you give it ,youv’e got to take it!!! Cheers Dennis.
Are you sure you spelt castigating properly Dennis, should it not have been CASTRATING.

They are both loading at London and Coastal Oil Wharves at Canvey Island.I don’t recognize the driver,he was from Barking depot,I worked out of Sheffield.
The dodgy nights out paid for the full weeks on genuine nights away or even a fortnight away odd times.

hiya dennis
been away for a few days on the road just like my dad used to do in his BIGJ4 240 GARDNER but i dont have such a good motor lol i have to contend with a b12 Volvo with a 12 speed i shift i do apoligise if if i was a wee bit over the top though it is strange that there are no sales books ect need to speak to my dad about that one very surprised magazines such as headlight did not do a feature on one . but i will find a piccy if it kills me lol
Hiya John, dinna "boil yer watter"ower this thread!! But I agree with you that its very strange after all this time that no “visible” trace of this iconic motor exist! I would have thought that someone from Wolverhampton or Maddiston would have delivered the written or photographic evidence by this time! Cheers Dennis.

hiya,
My sentiments exactly Dennis i’ve spoken in a similar vein all the way through this thread only other thing i’ve mentioned is about a mate of mine who visited the plant on several occasions and he never heard mention of the 8LXB being produced and he was there as an engineer to bring back knowledge of the mechanical side of things to pass on to his fitters for their maintainance schedules, so so strange, that no proving photographs and paperwork exist to settle this “problem” once and for all.
thanks harry long retired.
going over to my dads tommorow so will pick his brains on the number of big js 240 that smith took delivery of in the 70s

I don’t know that much about Guy Big J’s,but a lot of the units were J4T’s.Ithink the J6 and J8 were six and eight wheelers.
Cheers Dave.
