It looks like ,to me,that this Big J has re-cap Bandag treads on it’s drive axle! and I would hazzard a guess that the boat would have rope rubs on its paint work when it got to its destination, surely it could have been secured in a more “damage free” way? Those SOM shunters couldn’t “load a rifle” to save themselves!!!Dennis.

Don’t hear of any of those anymore Dennis.Used to be a remould factory in Knighton, don’t think they would be a lot of use on the heavier motors these days, although you do see them advertised, false economy I reckon.
I was a big user of Bandags Dave when I was almost exclusively on Michelin so I got my own cases back with the cap on.We didn’t really get many probs with them, but it became more cost effective to buy cheaper new tyres and sell the case, thereby lowering the cost per tyre even further. Also when the spray supression laws came in,if you had a tyre tread peel off you ripped the trailer mudguard off as well which made the odd breakdown we had a “tad” expensive.Dennis.

Haven’t been on a motorway for about three months Dennis, but it’s quite a common thing to see casing’s and large chunks of remoulds lying around the hard shoulder.
Cheers Dave.
i had local made recaps on the rear axle of a tipping trailer once . half the price said the gaffer . blew both back mudguards and light assemblies off in the first week , end of recaps !! dave
