Dave the Renegade:
Hi Dennis, and the rest of the Guy Big J followers. I was at a function last night and was talking to the son of a well known local haulier.I asked him had he any pics of their lorries that I could borrow,to post on the Welsh Border thread,he said yes going back through the various lorries they have owned in the last 50 years. To cut a long story short,he said do you remember the big J we used to have.I said no I didn’t realise they had one,he said we had one with a gardner 8 cylinder engine,I said an 8LXB,he said yes there was only 40 made.I told him about this thread,he said he doesn’t use a computer, but will lend me a picture of the lorry plus the log book.I told him about the Smith of Maddison claim,he said yes SOM had 39,we had the other one. Will post the pic and log book as soon as I get them.
Cheers Dave.
hiya,
Whoooa can’t wait am standing by with a bottle of single malt to dash o’er the fells and console Dennis to be truthful i’ve never even heard mention of a Big "J " being fitted with anything other than Rollers and ■■■■■■■ and we had a lot of them and came into contact with loads of them in other depot’s but it looks like we are going to see the “dinosaur” at last, bring it on.
thanks harry long retired.
This isn’t a wind up Harry. This chap has two 8LXB engined lorries,an Atki and a B series ERF in his shed,he is a keen restorer of lorries.I can’t remember a few of the lorries he mentioned them having, but I was out of circulation for a while after my accident. But hopefully have the stuff to scan soon.
Cheers Dave.
I also had an Atki and a B series both with 8LXB engines!!!Dennis.
He has still got theirs Dennis, his dad wouldn’t run anything else than Gardner engined vehicles back in the 70’s.I will have the proof as soon as I get his pics.
Cheers Dave.
If SOM had 39, how the hell haven’t they a picture of one considering they photographed almost everything else they had and surely the 8LXB GUY would have been unusual even then! I’m sure Dennis won’t give in though until the photo arrives as proof, can’t wait. Franky.

Hiya “franky” when Dave puts a shot on of his old Pal’s Big J 8LXB,fair enough he will have broken the ice so to speak, and at least proved there was such a beast!! but if SOM got the other 39 which I definitely find hard to believe as there were other large operators of Big Js at the same time and I feel certain that they would have said at the time “OK we’ll try one or two of that spec as well”!!!And as you say 39 tractors spread across a fleet like SOM you would think there would be a publicity shot or two or three about!!!Dennis.
I have found lots of information about the GUY V8 Tourer, a luxury saloon car and the 7 cylinder radial engine called a Wasp and lots of other information about Gardner.

No problem with the Broon Dennis only trouble it’s not produced up here anymore, so i’ll pick it up at Tadcaster, how dare they call it Newcastle brown ale, but Morcambe rock is made in Blackpool is’nt it.

I don’t think I would get ■■■■■■ on two pints of lager Dennis,as for Newcastle Brown Harry.I am partial to a few bottles of that,it still tastes ok wherever its brewed.
Cheers Dave.

I was interested in the early history of GUY and Sidney Guy working for Sunbeam, then GUY building cars and coaches and aeroplane engines as well as trucks. Guy built lorries in Lancashire, they built Scammell Crusaders in Wolverhampton and Big J was named after Jaguar Cars who owned them. A very twisted web of intrigue. Another discovery was that the “New” 2003 Jaguar X Type was not the first built with a diesel engine. Hugh Gardner fitted a diesel into his XK150
Dennis,I’ve already told you SOM had loads of them.Someday someone is going to prove it.Then we can look for one with a detroit in it.Now that would bring someone into the thread.

Looks like a lot of rubbish in the cab and laid around the chassis!
Hiya …I would say that GUY was a flying machine in its day… you can see the turbo at the end of the manifold
which says 290 rolls. I think some ■■■■■■■ turbo,s was on the back of the engine but not as far back as the rolls
Any how its not a 8 lxb or a 8lxb/d sorry to say.IICR that guy was a motor show vehical when new.

Definitely a 14ltr ■■■■■■■■ on a Rolls (280 in a Guy) the exhaust exits the turbo on the l/hand side.
The ■■■■■■■ has the exhaust stack as this one is, on the r/hand side. You tell them apart a mile away !

HI - thanks to whoever linked to my pic!
THis is the 44 ton prototype Guy Big J - latterly used as a recovery lorry.
It has the 9 speed Fuller and the ■■■■■■■ is rated at 252HP - although it has the same block as the 290 and could be uprated to that value.
There is a new cab waiting for it so fingers crossed it may reappear!
