GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

What a load of sh…

The mechanic:
What a load of sh…

Perhaps you’d like to expand on that ? I.E. what part do you consider Sh… and why ?

That’s just what any of today’s drivers and most guvnors would say if they were given a Guy Big J with an 8 LXB in it running at 40 or 44 tonnes   .So go compare the fuel consumption of a DAF XF with a 480 + motor in it running at those gross weights with that Gardner powered heap.

Hi All,

It’s a shame Uncle Albert Trotter,is dead he’d have had some input to Dennis & Martin Holroyd’s lads discussion.

Fergie47. Sorry if you were offended it wasn’t your post i’m fed up with it’s just that someone seems to have put it so far of track that he’ll need a sat nav to find his way back.

You are quite right Robert about where this thread has veered off to ! its gone right off the road it should have stayed on ! I’ll give Millars a bell to come and pull it out of the dyke !! I only put the thread up to enquire about the 8LXB Guy nothing else !! and now I feel like the bloke who only set out to drain the swamp but have ended up up to my arse in crocodiles !! Haven’t you got any bright ideas for a good thread ? Cheers Bewick.

Carryfast:
That’s what I meant by false economy.Working a gutless underspecced motor too hard will usually cause it to have bad fuel consumption whereas a bigger more powerful motor running at mostly part load will be more efficient.

As neither of us are old enough to remember the war, let alone drive a Patricroft powered Guy in anger, or even a Spitfire or Antar, the thread is veering off track again.

So while we wait for Bewicks wrecker, can you tell me why the Dutch ran all the small motors on International transport for many years. Even now a 380 is considered a big motor. Don’t mention the lack of hills because once out of the low countries, it is all uphill :stuck_out_tongue:

Hiya Wheel Nut I will send Carryfast along with a large shovel as he is mainly responsible for depositing all the Bull S**t on this thread he should have to clean it up . Cheers Bewick.

Here’s a 10’ 6" wheelbase R k Crisps Big J4T - jsut to bring this vaguely back on topic…

Hi Steve,
I still think the Big J was a nice looking lorry inits day,far nicer than the Seddon with the same cab.
Cheers Dave.

Now now Dave Speaking from experience the Seddon and Big J cabs were both produced by Motor Panels the only difference being the fronts of the cabs and for some reason the bonnet in the Guy was higher than the Seddon .Dennis.

I knew that Dennis, moter panels cab,but the Big J always in my opinion looked the nicer of the two, perhaps it was the grill, never drove a Big J,but did drive a Seddon, which was not much cop.
Cheers Dave.

We ran a similar number of Guy’s and Seddons all 180LXBs/6 spd with one exception a Seddon with ■■■■■■■ 220/Fuller 610 this was a nice motor to drive and fairly high geared. we ran it on double shift for a couple of years or more then it joined the Seddons on the Paper Mill fleet !! Both makes were very similar apart from the " Facial " differences where tastes varied !!! You might also have had a peculier taste in Birds in your younger days also Dave!!! Cheers Dennis.

Don’t forget that the same basic cab was also used on the Foden S40 and Scammel Crusader amongst others, a nice roomy cab for that era especially after a Foden S50 half cab!!

Pete.

Hi Dave,
Hope you are keeping well !
The only Gardner engine I had in a truck was an old Seddon with a 150 in and to make it go better I put a 180 pump spring in it !! Boy did that smoke when started on a cold morning.
The Maggie’s were just as you describe but don’t forget we had a first class local dealer with good staff
