Hiya thanks for the info.I’ll try and get a photo for the site.On the Fire engine side ERF did some Simon snorkel specials for Japan they had a straight eight
rolls royce petrol engine. The test driver got into a little trouble with Cheshire police for doing 85 mph down the M6 in 1967, There was a little more left
but not on this day.
JohnHiya John You do know that this site was supposed to be all about Guy Big Js /8LXBs and you have encouraged Carryfast to adulterate it with talk of Detroit Deisels and Rolls Royces !! You should hang your head in shame !!! Cheers Bewick
But if the Gardner had been adulterated by the Rolls and the Detroit then there might have been a 14 Litre supercharged and turbocharged spark ignition version of the 8LXB running on LPG at around half the price of diesel. Even the yanks could’nt have beat that.

Maybe but just think what it would sound like and cost to run on fuel at half the price
.Who needs a yank diesel which probably uses as much or more fuel costing twice the price and it would have pulled at 38 or 44 tonnes a lot better than the 240 would. It would have been ‘future’ proof

Hi Dennis,
I certainly think Carryfast should be welcomed to the fold,as a lorryman he is one of us,but as you are the Grand Master of the 8LXB Club I think the honour of inviting him into this motley bunch should fall to you.
Cheers Dave.
Hiya…Its me(Ive had a glass of red wine)sliping of the thread and been on carryfasts side hic as we have all said and know DDs used more fuel.
SO hic if diesel was cheaper(hooray)and we could poor the golden liquid in like nobodys buisness how much was it in your day hic …burp.
In 1965 was diesel at the pump 1shilling and 6 pence. I think i’am correct on that one(8 new pence)per gallon. I know you lads are longer in the
tooth than me. Was the golden liquid much cheaper before the mid 60s.That’ll keep the thread going a bit longer.HA HA HA.
JOHN.
Hi John,
I wasn’t buying diesel in 1965,but petrol was just over 5 shillings a gallon. I would think diesel was a bit cheaper, but not one and six, uness it was red. When I left school in 1963 the dearest petrol Esso golden was 5 shillings and 1 penny, the cheapest abot four and six.I suppose in real terms its not changed an awful lot,but in haulage the rates are much worse than in those days, also there is more competition for the work, with less local work for hauliers,a whole different ball game.
Cheers Dave.
I agree fully Dave its just change of the times. Iam erning good money at the moment more than ministers 40 years ago.My dad died 30 years ago(this week) and if he came back and had a look at todays prices he’d go mad.Yet alone all the gadgets and bleeding camaras watching us every minute of the day.
Are the tipper lads still struggling for work down your way.Fuel up this way is 115 a litre and rates don’t seem to have gone up that much its not good.

Hi John,
I think the work has picked up this week, they have a few tarmac jobs on,also the council’s start getting rid of any cash put aside for tarmac this time of year, before the new financial year starts in april, never makes sense to me. But maybe this time they won’t need to do that with all the potholes that need sorting. Whichever way you look at it,the roads are a mess. Good job I haven’t got a tidy car anymore, the suspension would be wrecked in no time.
Cheers Dave.
I remember diesel was cheaper than petrol in the 60s there was a lot of old yank cars around where people had put diesel engines in them to save money plus there was a person on the forecourt who filled you up checked your oil and shots of reddex were free and the air was free, funny my dad died 34 years ago last week if he was alive now he would be shouting "you buy water you actually pay for bottles of water you must ■■■■■■ mad theres a tap by the sink " I can also remember in the 60s when he got a job for £15 a week and he thought he had a right result that would have been working half day saturday as well and he would be up early sunday morning and cook us all breakfast now they were very happy days not sure what this has to do with a big guy with a big gardner engine though
I can say very pittyfully i do’nt think the guy is going to appear.I have spoken to a truck breaker and he can’nt remember ever seeing one.
I personally would have liked the idea as i thought the bigJ was quite a comfortable truck as the springs on the front axle was quite long
compaired to a pre A series ERF with a 5/7 LV cab.I would think a Volvo G88 was a hard ride as the front springs was very short,Then again
no one had a bad word about Volvos 88 series.

The compression ignition versus spark ignition engine argument is mostly based on a flawed comparison between the two in many cases. But the price difference now between LPG,(not petrol), and diesel ‘should’ make the argument in favour of spark ignition truck engines with modern forced induction and fuelling technology indisputable. What it all has to do with the Gardner debate is that if Gardner had worked with Rolls Royce during the time when the 240 was being developed and just mixed the idea of a big B81 with with the idea of a spark ignition 240 and the idea of forced induction both turbo charging and supercharging together with electronic engine management, all of which was technology available at the time, and which could have been upgraded as technology moved on,instead then there still might have been a Gardner/Rolls Royce Truck Engines today and if Guy Motors could have turned out something like the DAF 2800,95,and the XF we might have also had a Guy to put that engine into today.

Might it have been a weight issue John which would have made the drawbacks of using it outweigh the advantages of speccing it instead of a lighter smaller 6 cylinder motor considering the relatively small power advantage ?.
Just found this and the Smith of Maddiston threads. I worked at London Rd Glasgow and they had a Guy Big J with a 240. ND 999 was the fleet number, fast for a Gardener. Whichever Chinaman got that engine put in his junk would be the fastest smuggler in the Far East!
