GUY Big J 8LXB Tractor Unit

The article only shows the front of the cab with the Gardner 240 badge and we’ve been there before ha! You won’t glean much from the article in fact even Peter Davies who wrote it says Quote; ‘Guy also fitted some Big J4T’s with the Gardner 8LXB ‘240’ although no mention appears in its contemporary spec’ sheets, around 37 8LXB powered Big J4T’s were built, the majority of them having entered the fleet of Falkirk based haulier J&A Smith of Maddiston’ unquote.

Nothing new there than we’ve heard but I except this as genuine myself, I just wonder why there isn’t a more clear definition of these vehicles using words like ‘around’ and ‘majority’ makes it sound as if no one is quite sure! As for the rear cab engine view picture from the period, I wouldn’t hold my breath on seeing that any time soon. Franky.

Off out to Smiths (W.H.) THIS afternoon to buy this Magazine

O.h & some Eggs for Dennis on way back!!!

Could this be the closing chapter of this long debated topic■■?

E.W.

I sincerely doubt it EW,Dennis wanted proof in the form of a photograph of the Big Percy sticking out of the rear of the Big J cab, unless there is a picture of that in the magazine, the doubting Thomas will not be satisfied, unless he has bought the ■■■■■■■■ Big J,that has gone very quiet,Dennis is hiding the evidence in one of his sheds, perhaps Dan could pay him a visit,I’d go,but it’s a bit too far from Portugal, although I could “soften” Dennis with a bottle or 2 of a decent Portuguese red?’
Hiya,
So far there’s no real evidence of the manufacture at Guy Motors of the
240 Gardner being fitted in house, there is a couple of known hybrids,
no photographic evidence of the elusive pots sticking out of the arse
end of a factory built Big J having left the factory with the 240 in situ.

Drat…£3.99 worse off now! :smiling_imp:
The only reference to 8LXB I can see is that the editor comments that…"a small percentage of Big J4t’s were fitted with the Gardner 8LXB 240,
MOST OF THEM GOING TO Smith of Maddiston. !!!

I’ve just run a check and the UK Border Force have him on their watch list plus he is in “Bang up” sorry secure accommodation in Leatherhead and Matron and Nursie is very strict with the inmates, sorry “guests” so not much danger of him breaking out eh! Cheers Dennis.

That would explain his noticeable absence from some of these threads then…

Hiya,
Ah’ Leatherhead, I overnighted in a pub the only digs available it was a
Friday night and the town was closed, they get rid of their dead by
standing them in bus shelters and seating them in public houses it was
welcome relief next morning when my rest period said I could hit the
road towards home.

You’ve “digged” in some grotty places during your time “H” so Leman St. must have been “the dogs” Cheers Dennis.

All this time and no one has reported to have spoken with the seller of the Guy advertised in the classic truck mag,it sounds to me like this quest to find one is not all that serious :unamused:

Like one or two others, I reckon Bewick bought it and dropped the seller a few notes not to say anything. It’ll be under lock and key (and probably a security guard) in one of his barns up in th’fells, nestling alongside those Gardner and ■■■■■■■ engines that he failed to offload. Oh, and not forgetting the accusation of a TS3 or two amongst them as well. If I could afford the fuel, I’d volunteer to spend a few days tracking the barn down but I’ve just spent last month’s pension on a jar or two of Herefordshire’s best.

There’s an old saying " You can fill sandbags with 'owt" and I reckon this advert falls within this category ! Cheers Dennis.
