I doubt there will be a straightforward answer. But, I suspect it will depend a lot on how your contract is worded, especially the gross misconduct bit and also is there any reference to training or improvement that kind of thing ?

Depends how serious the accident was and how much damage was caused along with the cause?
Best seek legal advice as company could be making you a scapegoat for cutting staff, but if you were driving down the road with a cup of tea in one hand, a newspaper on the steering wheel and reaching up in an overhead locker with the other hand it would be deemed Gross Misconduct and rightly justified, however if it was just a case of you taking your eye off the ball for a split second then they couldn’t justify it as gross misconduct.
A little more info on the accident would help
