Gross misconduct?

been into work this morning 6 while 10 at 9 all the work was completed and there’s five of us stood around talking.i thought il check the car make sure every things topped up anyway the coolant was a bit low im talking a litre if that so i go and get the coolant which is in a plain green watering can and top it up. bear in mind the rest of the lads are watching me do this so put the cap back on shut the bonnet when one of the lads says u can get sack for that,so i say thanks for telling me before i did it now the lads wont say owt im sure but the cameras are always monitored by the big gaffer at Birmingham so whats your opinion guys do you think itd be worth coming clean to my gaffer saying i never thought and im sorry and taking them 5 litres of coolant as a good will gesture ?

How much are you goin to admit to tealeefin, the ONE ltr you said it needed or the FIVE ltr you said you ended up borrowing?

My opinion is you need to come clean burt also tell a couple of white lies eg your car was leaking coolant (slowly) and you needed to see a family member who’s miles away & ill so needed to fill the car with coolant.
Your offer to settle the costs will make them think that you’re being honest & had no intention of commiting fraud or theft. Was there any management around this morning who you could have asked? Your colleague who said “You can get sacked for that” is he a mate of yours or a company mole? If he seems like the company grass then I say come clean before the [zb] drops you in it.

Thats my opinion anyway.

Come clean but start crying, say your wife has left you and taken everything, including your personal coolant.

It should do the trick

Grow a set of stones and forget about it, hardly worth mentioning ! Sacked for stealing a drop of water and coolant must be a crap place to work.

I would mention it. something like my car boiled up on the way to work. I topped it up from the drum, do you want owt for it?

If he says yes, then it is a crap place to work, if your “mates” tell him it wont be your place of work, any excuse in these economic climates I am afraid, you must think you did wrong by asking about it, by the way your boss reads these forums :stuck_out_tongue:

If you get on al-right with your manager have a quiet word with him, apologise and offer to pay for what you took.
If it’s brought to his attention by his bosses in Birmingham he will be in an awkward position and not best pleased about it I wouldn’t think, if you’re reasonably sure the Brum people will know about it best give your manager a heads up on what [zb] is coming his way.

If he’s OK he’ll be able to cover for you

Good luck

any boss worth his salt would be more concerned at paying 5 drivers for an hours work while they stand and talk, than he would at the loss of a couple of litres of water.
If the other drivers were so concerned re being on camera , they wouldn’t have been stood around doing nothing. They would have been making the job spin out so as to keep looking busy.
stop worrying about it, nothing is going to happen.

cheers for ur replies guys i think im just gunna have a quiet word with her tomorow and see what she says i think itl b better that way then at least if birmingham do get in touch she knows the score

Wha? They’ll sack for taking some water?

Keep stum if asked say it was 100% water

yeh change of plan think thats what ll do if they sack me i can always go make a creamy mess wi fiona at stobarts lol

it’ll be a couple liters of lube next and before you know it, youll be dumping pallets of goods in a layby to pick-up on your way home an selling them on ebay… :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp: :smiling_imp:

Thats def the best thing to say. If you turn round and say sorry used some of your coolant other day, their just gonna say what the hell was you doing working on your car when you should of been working.

they sacked a pole at our place, instant dissmissal,he turned up for work, strolled across yard, filled up can, bottle or something with diesel oil, strolled back to car and put it in boot, told shunter reported him, sacked on the spot, told he made NO attempt at all to cover up what he did.

You should come clean at once
we provide screenwash , coolant and oil for the trucks - it all cost’s money
if i saw someone putting our wash in their car i wouldn’t be happy
maybe i wouldn’t sack them but i would certainly warn them about their conduct
regards
Steve

i once asked for screenwash for my car, as it was bad weather and i had run out. My boss said we dont normally let that happen cause if one person wants, everyone will. But he let me since i turn up, do my job dont cause problems and scratch their backs when it itches (and they do the same for me).

I would never have thought about just taken it, i was told from day one, there is always someone watching! In your situation i would do as said about, tell a wee porkie, your car was heating up and no one around to ask, offer to pay it back, and they will probably just laugh at you!

last week I was talking to some drivers in our parking place with the boss there and I said about getting a ferry back to the UK in august, he said he’ll book it on the firms account and i can pay him back less the VAT and you’re worried that you might get sacked over a couple of litres of diluted coolant :open_mouth: whats the world coming to? you were all stood round doing sweet FA and thats the worst worry? all i can say is the country is going to the dogs :unamused: :unamused: :unamused:

What exactly do you mean by coolant? Water? Anti-freeze? Or a premix of the 2?

Water I’m sure they wouldn’t bother about, but as has been said, anti-freeze etc. has to bought & is for the co’s trucks. Its the co’s property & you took it without seeking permission.

Up to you.

Presumably you wouldn’t mind if whilst you are out in their truck, they siphoned a litre of fuel out your car to use in one of the co’s vehicles?

My company do the same, they always book my ferries for me when I’m in the car and get I the discount. And I wash the car in the yard with their soap, I didn’t need reminding but things like this make me remember what a good company I work for.
