gritters

i’ve always fancied driving a gritter/snow plough.
does anyone know who the main players are in lancashire?

I don’t know the answer to your question but I suspect you might be a bit late for this year unless you can find someone desperate as the ones round here often advertise for their winter drivers around August time so they can have time to get them trained up before it gets cold.

Paul

Surely it’ll be the local council workers who would be trained up to drive them.

I think in most areas it is contacted out to a third party these days. It certainly is round here.

Paul

i used to drive for a subbie with his own trucks ,did so for about 18 years
the council contractor did not have enough employees to cover the nights ,and provide a work force for the day
it was a handy bit of extra cash , got a bit mad at times working normally through the day ,then out nearly all night when things were bad

You also need city and guilds in winter maintenance to drive a gritter, from what i gather its a 3 day course and £500 !!

Nice to know there’s alternative money making scam to DCPC.

If they could “tear along in this neck of the woods” did the road warrant gritting

As far as i understand it local councils have the responsability for their own local roads, i’ve seen these jobs advertised myself. Usually along the lines of gritter driver required, four days on four days off on standby. You get a basic amount for being on standby and more when you actually go out. Then there’s the Highways Agency contractors who service the motorways. main ‘A’ roads etc… and they do it in house with their own staff. I have a mate who does this very thing.
You’ll need ticketting up to the eyeballs to work for any HA contractor. Not sure on the situation with council gritting.

maybe not,as they were tearing along splattering parked cars and anything coming the other way.but i’m not a gritting expert mr suedehead . i thought the temperature decided if the road needed gritting, doesnt stop people driving too fast does it?
