Greece. What route?

Just curious. Does everyone going to Greece still use the ferries, or has the road system improved enough to make overland the preferred route these days ?.

I just asked my ex-boss, who still does a lot of long-haul, and he says it’s still the ferry.

haven’t been in a while but five years ago greece was a pretty large place, meaning a ferry to piraeus would be pointless if unloading in the northern parts, thessaloniki or kavala for example.

Hi Guys
The ferries dont go to Pireaus !, they go to Igoumenitsa, convenient for Northerly deliveries and transit to Turkey and Patras which is a couple of hrs drive from Athens. The only boats to and from Pireaus are inter island boats.
GS

As Gs says

Still use boats ex Venice Ancona or Bari
Bloody expensive still and a sat night sailing ex Italy the dearest around £1000 mark

10 years ago or so, we used to use Ancona to Patras. Usually Superfast, the price was about £450 each way. It was a great trip in the summer months with a swimming pool and lots of distractions on board. Happy days.

Use the ferries from Italy and from igoumenitsa the new motorway upto thessaloniki costs 40 euro’s.

We have trucks over from Crete every week/other week and they go Igoumenitsa to Brindisi.

Patras to athen to patras
Ship back empty around £150 now for tolls and port taxes both ways

Friday night ex Ancona about £300 cheaper than Saturday night

Wednesday coming back into Italy was always cheapest sailing fir some reason
