Greasing Time

Does it still go on? I was doing the 250 hour greasing schedule on my Cat at 6.30 this morning (bucket pins, z bar, ram linkages, steering rams, lift arms, propshaft etc) and wondered if anyone still does this or is it “done by competent persons” nowadays?

I grease the Fassi crane on my truck, normally once a month, but some time more often depending on useage.
I don’t touch the truck though, thats left to Scania

Owen

Same as Hippo, I spank some grease round the crane when it gets a bit creaky  Also have some to do around the beavertail. Chassis is left to Scania R&M contract.

After doing all my work today, I then went to the Scania dealer myself (as no one else had found the time :unamused: )and collected the bits so that I could repair the damage caused yesterday when matey drove into the back.

That would’ve been a pricey light cluster (I’m assuming that’s what it was).

I always buy generic wherever possible. Not only does it save me money it’s starves dealers of business and might encourage them to focus on learning how to competently fix the products they sell.

2 light clusters at £55 each :astonished: plus rear long vehicle markers and a couple of other bits.

Ordinarily we use an independent auto electrical company who are very good, however the last cluster we bought was wired slightly differently and we had some faffing about to get it right. I just needed to get the vehicle 100% roadworthy again quickly and we will pass the bill to the insurers to sort out. We could have just given the vehicle to the dealer to fix and it would have cost a bomb in labour too.

My time is not worth much

£55 was a lot less horrendous than I would’ve guessed. It is an upside that you know they’ll just plug and play.

I’ve bought generic mirror heads in the past and found they then don’t match the electric adjustment switch direction and had to rewire. No big problem to do but if you were paying a fitter to do it could end up having been a false economy.

If the other party was a small operator they might be happy to just pay something like £250 to cover the cost as it’s probably less than their excess.

I used to do my Cat every week and the same with the Moxy’s but then I did own them so it was in my own interest, its a bit of satisfaction seeing the grease being pushed out of the joints I think, lads on the last job I was on used to get 3 hours extra a week to grease but not many of them did, it was always the old hands who used to.

Yes, I always find it very satisfying when you see it coming out the joint. I used to like using the more expensive red bearing type grease for customers vehicles as you could see where you’d been and they could also easily see that it had actually been done.

It was a specialist merchant with several depots, their 7.5t is going to cost a good few quid to put right.

New windscreen, front facing mirror, bonnet, grill, headlight, driver’s keks.

You’ll need a much vehicle to break an Andover plant body  , it’s just the other bits that get screwed on to it.

I assumed he’d reversed into you :open_mouth:

I spent 35years driving heavy plant always did greasing and if working away from home changed engine oil and filters, got paid 10 hours a week for it though.

How did you rate Moxys as an owner? I drove a couple of mid to late '90s models and hated them. Found them to have an awful ride and cheap and nasty when compared to a Volvo or Terex.
Going back to greasing, I’d rather have an autolube but the benefits of manual greasing are that you can spot problems quicker and it gives you a better understanding of the vehicle/machine.

If I’m on our cat 953 I grease the lower arm on the bucket every day! It’s a common wear point on them, the rest I do once a week, same as if I was on a 360. As for our Scania hiab and trailer, I do it If it needs it, but it will always get done at service and 6 weekly inspections.

When i was on 360 it got greased at least once a week if not more. Just a shame all the lads on our sites dont do it. The last 6 month we had 5 center pins on 6t dumpers go ■■■■■■. Top pin on a 360 snap, komatsu dont stock the pins cause they never heard of 1 breaking before and countless new pins in quick hitches on 3t mini diggers! It doesnt take long to run round a machine, wagon etc with a grease gun and a couple of tubes

Exactly mate, I can do the daily and weekly points in the time it takes to refuel.

I used to have a grease gun with me on euro runs,a few hours to spare i did all the points that needed doing, and the propshaft,to keep the old 142 in good shape.
Boiler suit essential.

The Moxys were in a word - fair, I brought them off a guy who had lost his work so they came pretty cheap, he had been working for Greyhound and we all knew what they were like :unamused: I had extra work from where my Cat was so I dropped them on that job, decent workhorses but as you say the ride was terrible, I had them just over a year and got what I paid for 'em plus I had a year of work out of them. I never had any major mech problems with either of them but as I was always on site I could keep my eye on them, never managed to get one over either but I have had a couple of Volvo’s over  Autolube I think is good, never had it on any of mine but as you say you can spot a problem straight almost away, good old times
