Grangemouth best route

just got phone call going to grangemouth tomorrow whats best ie fastest route a1 or cross and go m74 etc ,leaving home at 2.30 so i know its short notice but any input welcome .oh yeah leaving from ipswich ta.

I would go M74. I try and avoid the A1 if possible.Where in Grangemouth are you going?

a1 mate, its pointless crossing over to the west,to come back over towards the east, even though grangemouth is middleish,it tends to be closer to edinburgh.
the a1 is pretty fast moving, you may get held up on the western bypass round newcastle, and the roadworks at the bottom of the team valley, but it doesnt take long to get through.the a1 above newcastle is usually ok,except if you get stuck behind a plodder that will not move over.

I would say personaly its the 74(m73-a80-m876-m9) , even from glas Grangemouth is only 25 min its a nice easy route ,
you know who your going to there ?

cheers fellas quick response niiicccee. yeah going to asda dont know address last time i went a1 to falkirk got flashed archaic 40 mph law might stick to mways, again cheers

■■?
then why ask which way to go,if your mind is made up?
just cos its motorway doesnt mean its faster,if you cross over a14,m6 etc,you will hit plenty traffic around brum and manchester,if you cross 66,you get held up on single carriageways, and hills, and you are crossing over to come back??.dont see the sense myself, but each to their own.
on the a1,if you do speed, its simple.
cameras facing you do NOT flash even if you do 56.
always slow down to 40mph for every camera on your side of the road.

Just for your info-

ADC - M9 exit jnct 6,turn right at T jnct,400 yds along the road is a rbt, take 3rd exit (under bridge),200 yard along road(opp Arnold Clark garage) turn right and follow road straight to gatehouse

CDC - M9 exit jnct 6,turn right at T jnct,400 yds along the road is a rbt, take 3rd exit (under bridge), follow road to rbt then take 3rd exit (right turn),straight across next rbt,at the next rbt, turn right to gatehouse.

Hope this helps!

It’s a where your from thing I think. I’m from Darlo, minutes from the A66, and it breaks my heart to cross the country twice, and if I was in Newcastle I certainly wouldn’t. Truth is, from where I am, it’s often quicker and more economical to go up the M6 A74, even doing Perths etc. Trouble is, I still prefer the A1 so normally make my mind up on the day. My only dilemna when travelling up from Essex would be M6 all the way, or straight up the A1 to Scotch Corner, then across the A66.
Happy travelling which ever way you go

I guess the OP may have gone to bed now. I too was thinking it was silly to cross the country to the west coast only to cross back again, however I was suprised to find A14 M6 M74 was the route AA Routefinder came up with.

Putting various “vias” in, i git this info: (Obviously truck transit times will be a bit longer)

Route 1. as above 453 miles 7 hrs 55

Route 2. A14 A1 A66 M74 421 miles 7 hrs 58

Route 3. A14 A1(Berwick) 430 miles 8hrs 23

take your pick!

Only thing i would take into consideration is that with just one hold up on the Berwick route you might not get there in one shift.

If he is going at 02.30 it may be a bit late, but even living in Hull the sharpest way to Scotland is always over the 66 and up the 74, unless you are going to Edinburgh or Musselburgh. even to Dundee I will use the western route. forget the miles saved, you are better to keep moving on straight roads.

You take the low road and I will take the high road, I will be in Scotland afore ye

no anger management needed here?
but it is where you are from/or where you are going thing.
all my deleveries are to scotland from either yorkshire or north east to scotland,if im coming from yorkshire going to inverness say,i would go 66,74 cos it is quicker.
just thought that starting from ipswich, its quite a hike across to the west, just to come back over again.
most of the time, just depends on which way i fancy at the time.
there is not huge differences either way.

I’d aim to get there for about 7.30 latest. The Traffic round Newcastle, and down into Teeside can be a pain around 8 O’clock. Sounds like you’ve had a canny day. Also watch the speed cameras between you and Morpeth (not that you speed or owt  )
