For them that know, my next medical at 55 is due soon and gained acquired rights about 10 years ago at my first medical to use a lesser eye sight standard as class 1 was passed in 1988, I skipped the last medical about 5 years ago with the photo change loophole.
Next medical is due in June this year and was wondering if the acquired right would still be active as long as my eyesight standard is still the same as the last medical, or would I have to basically reapply for acquired rights again at the next medical, thanks.

Never knowingly under…hit anything
Get an eyesight test at your opticians (or use the prescription you currently have if it’s less than 1yr old), take a copy of the prescription with you when you go for the medical. The doctor will use that to complete the paperwork
This is what I did when I did my medical
Peirre
54 and 11/12th
I just get the doctor to fill out the form as necessary, it goes to Swansea, they pass it to medical branch, several weeks later unless your sight has deteriorated further or your name has lit all the red lights up at Swansea for some reason, they pass you under the previous eyesight standards.

Thanks, last time I did it I had to prove that I had done something like 180 days driving for them to accept, not done any for the last 15 months as I’ve gone back cabbing, but usually do holiday relief in the summer months, spoke to opticians today and they said it should be ok if result is still the same as 3 years ago when I did a group 2 medical for cabbing, which is strange as it’s better than it was 10 years ago.
I think part of the disclosure on the application is that you’ve been driving HGV’s for some period of time during the previous period, surprisingly few occasions required though, hopefully you’ve done enough to keep them happy.
Go to the optician get a test if you need glasses get them …Forget this acquired crap if you need glasses you need glasses…It isn’t a macho thing…I wear glasses for driving ,and I notice a hugh difference ,and the optician said my eyesight was fine !!!I don’t think acquired rights would hold up in a court of law …I passed my HGV in sept 85 and I do not drive for a living …As you age you wear out and parts fail just like a truck

Guess trucks and us can both have leaking “AdBlue” systems…?

LOL that is one way of putting it ….Medically I don’t think people should try to use grandfather rights ,there shouldn’t be the option to be honest …Being from Glasgow I remember the bin truck accident ,and think using grandfather rights is as bad as not declaing poor eyesight which is easily rectified with glasses …

Why, when my eye sight is no different to what it was at medical for provisional hgv licence 31 years ago, just because they have changed the rules doesn’t make a driver unsafe.
As for glasses, it would be great if they worked but they don’t they actually make the condition worse, the optition and DVLA have been happy for me to drive trucks for 30 years with out corrected vision so why change now, condition I have affects 1 eye the other is perfect, and can see well enough.
And to think you have to do all this crap for 9 quid an hour
Glasses won’t cure my issue either, and i was passed as fit long before they shifted the goal posts.
If some of those who imagine having perfect vision in both eyes the only standard to attain could manage similar driving/work/accident records as those of us now deemed no longer capable/wanted, the roads would not be littered with so much debris nor would the morgues be quite so full.

But to dodge a medical via a loophole as well shows you to be a total ■■■■■■■■ who should have his license revoked. No wonder the authorities are cracking down on HGV when we have drivers with this attitude
If there is a deterioration in your eyesight or physical health I believe you are legally obliged to inform the DVLA for ALL Licences not just LGV.
When I was 43 I went to the Opticians for an eye test, because I struggled to see those old little black and white road signs from a distance.
The result was I needed glasses.
I was told after 40 as your years increase, your eyes deteriorate, and you need them checked at least every 2 years and every year after 60
Grandfather rights is a load of tosh, why avoid the truth

Whats the truth i’m avoiding? my eyesight has not changed since I passed my HGV test 31 years ago, and been accident free from the start, why should some one lose their licence just because the rules changed.

If you have not had a medical or an eye test for so long, how do you know that your eyes or health have not deteriorated,is that on the assumption because you have been lucky that you have not had an accident
It is because of people like this, that we are treated as un-skilled rabble. Not only are you you admitting to having lesser eye sight than required in today’s traffic, you also proudly explain how you avoided having to undergo a legaly required medical, due to a loophole. Comparison with the Glasgow bin wagon driver are obvious.
I often wonder why some (quite a lot actually) of the drivers of the firm I work for seem to ignore my flashing head lights or hand wave on the motorway in passing, I am getting more and more the feeling that they can’t actually see across the carriage ways…
