Govt to withdraw BFPO delivery service

Alright. Perhaps it shouldn’t be posted here but, knowing that a large number of members have either an 'affinity to ’ or a ‘history with’, Rikki included, our Armed Forces, then the item perhaps justifies a ‘headline’ placement.

Personally, I would have ‘headlined’ it as, “Just how Morally Decandent can our Politicians stoop?”

However, Sky chose a less controversial headline.

The decision to ■■■■■ British military mail services in Europe and America
To save money, subsidised postage is being withdrawn from service personnel and families based from Naples to Brussels.

It also means their relatives in the UK will have to pay the full rate to send parcels and letters overseas.

The cutback has left one MEP furious that Westminster apparently keeps a first-class service for itself, while expecting those in uniform to pay more to keep in touch with loved ones at home.

Godfrey Bloom, UKIP member for Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire, has lambasted the slashing of British Forces’ Post Offices (BFPO).

“When the servicemen and women of our country are fighting and dying for this government’s dubious honour, it treats them with the contempt it has shown across the board,” he said.

"The BFPO has for decades provided a lifeline that is utterly vital in maintaining moral and now they want to cut it.

“MPs have granted themselves £7,000 a year postage - but they seem to be happy to put extra costs on service families. How typical, how venal, how vile.”

The row is likely to intensify as the Christmas posting season approaches.

For 200 years the Armed Forces have run their own separate postal service.

BFPO operate at more than 80 locations on land and many more on Royal Navy ships.

Wherever it originates, all post sent to or from BFPO addresses is charged at the UK inland rate.
In April, the Government quietly announced the closure of more than one in seven military post offices to save £1.7m.

Scheduled to shut over the next year are 11 mail centres across mainland Europe - in Brussels, Brunssum, Ramstein, Stavanger, Karup, Naples, Rome, Milan, Lisbon and Valencia.

The office at the US naval base in Norfolk, Virginia, will also cease operations.

An MoD spokesperson told Sky News: "These are mainly the smaller ones, with relatively low volumes of mail and employing perhaps one or two people.

"We are working hard to make sure that nobody is inconvenienced.

“Personnel will be able to use the host countries’ postal services and we are looking to increase overseas allowances to cover any extra costs.”

But Mr Bloom argued it would bring additional problems for service personnel and their families based overseas.

“They could be disenfranchised if they are postal voters, some credit card providers will not send cards abroad - M&S for example - unless to a BFPO address, some savings options may be closed to them - ISAs require a UK base,” he said.

"Open university students will become foreign residents, thus hitting them with higher fees.

“Quite how the MoD, and its political masters can justify this beggars belief.”

He went on: “It is if they deliberately looked around to see the nastiest way they could stab our services in the back.”

The MEP was also urging protesters to sign a petition against the changes on the Downing St website.

And from the Comments section

· My husband is in Iraq and has already had his BFPO address cancelled so I am no longer able to send him parcels or letters.

It is absolutely disgusting the way our boys and girls are being treated by this goverment,

Parcels and letters from home are a lifeline for our troops and something they look forward to, why take away a little bit of pleasure from someone who is laying their life on the line for this government and country.

Whilst TNUK is not a campaigning organisation, this is a private post intended to draw to the attention of members a subject that may well be close to their hearts.

And the link to the Petition, which already has 22K+ signatures:-

Petition signed and letter sent to my MP.

No need to worry or get in any kind of panic over this. Labour will be gone by next summer and we won’t be seeing the likes of them again for decades. The next government will restore this service no problem.

Enit ,Once any thing is closed down it will cost too much money to restart
again so sorry yes join in and voice the people choice that the system should be left alone or you will see such a rise in the amount of ■■■■■■ off service people who need the service, a bluey is some thing which cheers one up when stuck in the middle of the
worst place on earth be it a camp in Belize , Iran, or any where else, These idiots
who think only about saveing money and not about the welfare of those who are
out there some where earning the Queens shilling, need to serve a tour and then see what they would do, Sign up , when the goverment see,s what the peoples reaction is
only then can such decisions be stopped.

One of the reasons why the current “government” in the UK come up with such profoundly non sensical ideas regarding the Armed Forces is that barely any have ever served their country - although a good many have fleeced it royally.

They simply have no idea of what it is like to spend six months on a tour of duty far away from friends and family with the constant danger of being shot at, blown up or very probably both. They therefore have no idea about the “little” things which help to ease some of the many discomforts, such as a cheap, fast mail service. And to quote a saving of 1.5million pounds is pathetic - I doubt this would pay for one days ammunition expenditure in Afghanistan at present.

I’m pretty lethargic when it comes to most things and the armed forces aren’t particularly close to my heart with me not being very patriotic but even I signed that as if you’re asking people to go and fight/die for their country, the least you can do is pay for their letters home!

They should scrap Trident, ID cards and the 2 aircraft carriers they’re thinking about buying that they will probably never use, that’d pay for the letters home!

Although I’m not particularly military, I’ve signed this petition.

IMHO this move by the Govt. is not only scandalous, it’s also an outrage. :smiling_imp:

According to the online petition, the current number of respondents at the time of me posting this is:

Signatures: 23,305

I expect the regiments etc, will start their own service. Anything going abroad will get put on with re-supply transport.

I e-mailed my ■■■ hole MP, I don’t expect it to change anything but I did describe the smile I would have on my face the day after the next general election. Roll on the general election. I find it incredible the Liebour party are even thinking of standing again. Their will be more snowmen sunbathing on the beach in Benidorm than Liebour MP’s in parliament.

Nothing that this “Government” of former tree-hugging Marxist zbs, does, ever surprises me when it comes to them showing their contempt for the British Armed Forces, of which from 1953 to 1958 I was a proud member.I have signed the petition. I believe that it will be treated with similar contempt by this shower of bar stewards, as every other petition to the zbs, ( “Rhymes with Hunts”) gets treated. It also needs to be clearly understood, that what we are talking about here is NuLabour, Tony Blair and Peter Mandelson,s Thatcherite Clones invention. Not the old Labour Party, which for all it,s failings in the 1970,s was the only true voice of the Working Class people of this country. This Nu Labor mobs motto is " Honi soit qui mal y Asbestos", which translates from the Latin as “xxxx you Jack, I,m Fireproof”.

This Govt cocked with the Gurkahs and now want to alienate the British public over another forces issue - perhaps they don’t want to have a chance of winning the next election :exclamation:

Petition signed.
I,too, have never had anything to do with the Armed Forces. That is until 3 weeks ago when my 16yr old grandson went into the Army.He is at the Foundation College in Harrogate. We were told to send plenty of letters to help keep his spirits up.If this helps a lad who is not so far away from home really, then I can just imagine what mail must mean to the boys out in Iraq and Afghanistan.

£1.5m saving? That’ll buy a few duck-houses,I suppose :unamused:

You got that right. What got me over the Gurkha’s was they were allowing literally tens of thousands of Asians every year come here,(many of whom could be would be terrorists and/or fraudulent insurance scamers) then denying the Gurkha’s. Who have proven their loyalty and are greatly respected by both the Army and general public.
I can’t think of one single thing this government has got right in the 12 years they’ve been in. Even the minimum wage only legitimises poverty wages.

Petition signed: The BFPO has been a saviour to hundreds of thousands of alienated herberts in jingly (etc) lands although many are nicer places than UK. Enjoy it, fellas.

Long may the BFPO prosper in its honest endeavour - not that Broon has a clue what that is.

British Forces Post Office , mate,

It is not quite as bad as the OP has suggested
“As part of Planning Round 09 the decision has been taken to close 12 Forces Post Offices (FPOs) in NATO HQs with British elements. This means that the FPOS at SHAPE, Brussels, Brunssen, Ramstein, Stavanger, Karup, Naples Rome, Milan, Lisbon, Valencia and Norfolk VA will have to close by September 2010. This not only has implications for the postal staff in these locations but as importantly on those personnel and families living there.”
Those on operations or posted to garrisons will still have the full BFPO service.

I am not a supporter of the current government, I just wish you to be correctly informed.

If it’s not supposed to happen untill 2010, that’s the same as saying it’s not going to happen at all. Lie bour will be long gone by then.
Thank god.

SLOW down boys…it’s only 11 post offices and all they are is a desk in some foriegn land! It’s not the full blown downtown post office here!!! Those jobs are the highly sought after ones as they do naff all all day (nearly) apart from apply the suntan lotion!!! So good news, it’s about time they shut these places down!!!
You will still get the blueys to Afgan and even all the way down to Punta Gorda in Belize…
Yes the government are all a bunch of robbbin gits and con artists but even the Labour party wouldn’t stop the blueys to Afgan…would they?

I used to work at Mill Hill (The BFPO)

Realising that mosquito ridden Edgeware was probably hell, miles from home & having seen the value of the work of both this government and BFPO facilities worldwide, I’m suggesting that the former (to whom I’d not toss a detachment ‘comfort’ sock) keep 101% away from the latter - to whom many have much to be grateful.

Message ends.

If the Government are so keen to save money, why don’t they stop funding Tony Blair’s bodyguards. It’s been reported that lying slimy bar steward bodyguards costs us £3million a year. Shutting these BFPO sites is saving £1.5. I know which one I’d prefer to keep running even if the BFPO guys do bugger all all day.
If slimy’s life is in so much danger, why don’t they keep him locked up, nice and safe? I hear he even banned everyone in his street from parking in case any of the cars are car bombs. Even his next door neighbours hate his guts.
