I’ve got an interview at Eddie Stobarts Aveley depot.
As I’ve never had an interview I’m my life I was wondering if anyone could give me some advice and helpful tips! Thanks
This is how they go about it in Ireland

STOBART ASSESSMENT
Every driver must have the following:
- STEEL TOE CAP BOOTS
- HIGH VISIBILITY JACKET
- SAFETY GLOVES
- DRIVERS LICENCE
- DIGITAL TACHOGRAPH CARD
- CPC CERTIFICATE
Any driver that does not present all of the above WILL NOT BE ASSESSED!
The assessment will be in 2 parts:
- Written theory test
- Driving Test — Automatic Scania
Written theory
The test will be multiple choice questions, Please see example provided at the back. You will sit the test in the transport office.
These questions are mostly based on driver’s hours, for example:
A driver starts at 16:00pm and finishes at 02:30am — how many hours break does the driver need to take?
There are also some road signs at the back in English and Irish.
If you fail the theory test, you can re-apply to do the test within 2 weeks.
Driving Test
Driving test will be carried out from the site - this will assess your skills as a driver. If you do not pass the theory test you will not sit the driving test.
When you go out to the yard the assessor will ask you to do the coupling/uncoupling procedure. You will either have to hitch or unhitch the trailer. Please see below for instruction on how to do this correctly. Be verbal when doing this and talk your way through it with the assessor
Uncoupling Procedure: Before you start this procedure, make sure the keys are out of the ignition. You will automatically fail the test if you are outside the truck and the keys are sitting in the ignition. - Look for your trailer and apply the parking brake to lock the trailer
- Wind down the legs
- Disconnect the electrical and air suzies — air lines that go from the truck to the trailer
- Pull the dog clip (safety clip) on the 5th wheel
- Move tractor unit forward until 5th wheel unlocks — you will hear it click
- Most important: Lower air suspension in tractor unit
- Pull out from under trailer and level tractor unit
- Make sure trailer is safe and legs are down.
If you fail to do steps 6 and 7 you will effectively “drop the trailer” and you can damage the mud guards, lights etc… and fail
Coupling Procedure:
Follow all of the above steps backwards — start at number 8.
One of the last steps when doing the coupling procedure is to check the dog clips. The dog clip is on a chain on the 5th wheel and it prevents the 5th from unlocking while driving.
Pre Drive Checks:
You will have to carry out some pre-drive check, make sure you check all of the below:
- All lights & Mirrors
- Water & Oil
- Any damage there may be to the truck
- Fuel tank - must be full
- Tyres — should be hard, not burst. Make sure to check the wheel nuts. They have yellow arrows on them, if wheel nuts are locked in properly, all the arrows will be pointing each other. If the arrows are not pointing each other they need to be tightened.
- Cab interior and exterior should be clean
Drive:
Once all of the above is completed you will then go on a small run with the assessor. Make sure you wear your seatbelt. - While out on the run you need to keep the rev counter in the green. This means that you are being fuel efficient. If you are too heavy on the accelerator the green light will go off, and this means you are using too much fuel.
- Your road position is key during the driving test. You need to maintain good lane discipline both on the straight and while coming to roundabouts. The assessor will tell you in plenty of time, what direction he wants you to take.
- When approaching roundabouts you need to drop down by at least 2 gears. Pick your lane and stay in your lane, no crossing over lanes while on the roundabout. Make sure you use your indicators, but only when you are leaving the roundabout. Also remember your blind side when leaving the roundabout.
- If the roundabout is clear, keep going; don’t stop the vehicle if it is not necessary.
- You need to obey the speed limit at all times while you are out and you be failed if you break the speed limit.
- When you return to the depot, the assessor will get you reverse into a bay. Don’t be afraid to use all the space available to straighten up the truck so it makes it easier for you to reverse.

you done all of the above and you still forgot to check the trailer height
How are you supposed to check the lights without the key in the ignition if you’re on your own?

^^^^^^^^ Thats what I did at Averley Easy really just remember to check the height indicator and set it acordingly.
Coffee is 20p out the machine and if you like sugar then its one in about ten that show some signs of it.
You will more than likely be assessed by Lloyd Frampton! He’s a good man and a Gooner! He will tell you what he wants you to do.Just a safe smooth drive and show some common sense and you should pass the assessment if your any good!
Ask him if Stobbies want 15 hour shifts out of you? Then say "You only pay for 14 and a half hours!
Jacko the Ops Manager is usually alright! Are you after the chipliner tramping job,or shifts?
What about checking the wind screen wash bottle,if it is full or not,and testing the horn too, just an idea that is all.
Do some research on line about the firm,to show an interest, arrive early to find parking, and allow for traffic jams on route, the night before, you will be finding hard to sleep, that is normal to be anxious.

Well fingermissing, i have not submitted myself to the scrutiny of the green giant, I am quite happy with my current boss, but have posted directly from their application document in an effort to help this person, maybe you should try likewise, instead of a smart arse reply
