There really is no excuse. Obviously on a route he/she wasn’t familiar with but there is no excuse for not being aware of low bridge signs, especially when you’re driving a double-decker bus loaded up with passengers.
Her* excuse
Probably an agency driver…
Shouldn’t laugh though, one person with serious facial injuries according to the report. The driver should never be allowed behind the wheel again.
foreigner ha ha well there was a foreign driver who started for national express a while back, and he had a sat nav, and still had to ask the passengers the way…takes all sorts and theres always a first time for everything. i`m not putting them down by the way, just supposing.
Mobile phone footage from an eyewitness, bit of blood and scenes of distress so up to you if you click on it… Nothing massively graphical though.
Local tv news says it was a young female driver who’d only been in the job a month.
Just watched Kaisters uploaded footage… If the blond woman is the bus driver she’s a disgrace of a human being!! She’s just peeled the top off the bus and she’s busy collecting her belongings and getting her bag and hi-viz vest!! She should of been up those stairs leading those passengers off safely and helping the injured. She needs to get a job in McDonalds where she can be supervised at all times!! I appreciate she was in shock but she’s clearly a weak individual!!

+1 Her behaviour is ■■■■■■■ridiculous. Knowing that firm (used to work for them) it’s a pretty safe bet she’s down the road.

Revenue protection is one thing but she could have just kicked the loose coins into the drivers pod and shut the door, I don’t believe the bus company would be too bothered about £200 at all in this circumstance.
I have to agree that she should have either been helping other passengers or being helped/treated herself (shock).
Women drivers hey she should have seen the sign its unmissable

Looking at how far the bus is under the bridge I don’t think it was the fact that she didn’t know the bridge height, more id say that she didn’t know the bus height.
WTF

I wouldn’t say her behaviour was ridiculous. It was human. She is very clearly in a state of shock, and humans cope with it in very different ways. A large percentage react by going into automatic behaviour, something they’ve done many times in that space that’s ‘normal’, like putting her hi-viz on, and making sure she picked stuff up off the floor, whilst her brain is trying to make sense of what happened.
She was probably also hoping some knuckle dragger wasn’t going to sucker punch her as they got off the bus. How do we know she didn’t smack her head on something?
Nothing weak about her at all, she was just as involved in that accident as everyone else.

Sorry my friend, please do keep up
I reckon more lorries hit bridges than buses.
That bloke who wandered round the scene with his camera was a great help wasn’t he?
Problem with bus drivers is because 99% of the time they are on the same approved routes day in day out, they just aren’t conditioned to pay attention to restrictions.
I bet she took a wrong turn and a passenger recommended a short cut back on track.

You’re probably right about being used to going the same way all the time. I was driving buses here in Brisbane and we did different routes all the time, sometimes four or five the same day. Having said that, she’s paid to drive and should be awake to all that sort of thing.
She had been with first bus since June and this was her first week unsupervised. So I reckon she is a complete newbie!
I don’t know if you can judge her actions in the aftermath, that is a major crash she would have been in severe shock after that. Not everyone can be a superhero and jump into action.
I suggest she look for a different career though.
