The description of the Gaddafi “compound” Bab al-Aziziya is a little misleading. Apart from his tents, the rest of the compound is like a small town.

When I was in Abijan we employed a local lad as an interpretor, he took us to the walled compound where he lived with loads of others in the poor part of the town. He was right proud of his little hut which consisted of a single bed, table & cupboard. One window and a tin roof. We was treated like royalty and had to be introduced to all his ‘gang’.
