Goods vehicle identity disc

Couldn’t find any legalisation regarding the disc as an employed driver. All I want to know is, if your company buys a new or old truck and puts it on the road straight away, how long can you drive it, if at all, until the blue disc needs to be displayed. And do I need to ask a question if an interim licence has been issued until the blue disc arrives or is that something else all together.

Hope that question makes sense!

Cheers

Not your problem, it’s the company’s issue to sort not yours

IIRC its 28 days.

I agree, beyond making the company aware the vehicle doesn’t have one (our daily defect sheets have a tick box for it) I wouldn’t worry about it.

Really? I thought I wasn’t allowed by law on the road if one wasn’t displayed after a set time of receipt of the vehicle (like 28 days like alba says). 15 years I’ve been driving but not had to think about it before as it’s always been there! Haha. Ok. Fair enough. That’ll be why I can’t find it anywhere online then!!

It’s not allowed on the road with out a valid GVTD
As in a most defects if it’s a GV9 offence then it’s got to be VOR,d

OP is referring to ID disc, not tax disc and either way it’s still upto the company to ensure they are valid not the driver.

Especially more so now that the driver can’t check tax anyway.

It’s not like your personal car where you are fully responsible, the truck belongs to the company so their responsibility.

Only so much a driver can, and is , responsible for when vehicle is not theirs

Yes, there is a requirement to display one after it’s been used for a certain period (which allows for short term hires), but I would see as I company’s responsibility rather than the driver being held responsible.

If you made your employer aware that a vehicle didn’t have a disc and they told you that they had just hired it that week you wouldn’t necessarily know any different.

As has been suggested an operator has 28 days to get and display the operators licence disc.

I can’t see anything in the sanctions booklet other than a verbal warning for the operator if the vehicle does not display the disc.

My apologies I did mean the ID disc
I’m only going on our companies policy
We own about 50 trailers and our contracted haulier hire in around 80 more plus extra when demand required
I’m a yard Shunter and again our maintenance is done again by a third party
The mobile fitter who comes in daily as told me before it’s an GV9 offence if the ID plate is not fitted so again I’m no expert or what the law states
But I’m not allowed to load any trailer not fitted with a ID plate
I don’t know what the rules are if your pulled over by Vosa and your trailer is not displaying one you could always reel out the old line
“It was there when I did my circle check”
Just think it’s best to be safe than sorry because you know these days every body likes to pass the blame on to the driver
