In East Yorkshire I used to charge £12 an hour and had plenty of work. You don’t need to register for VAT unless your turnover is £70k or more and I’d avoid it if at all possible. Also I set up as a sole trader, not a limited company.

One word of advice: Write a water proof “TERMS OF BUSINESS” that you get every one you work for to sign. Make sure in it you state you are not liable for any damages, costs and losses arising from any action you take. If you don’t have something like that, they can take you to the cleaners.

Hasn’t done me any harm.

Ken.

You can voluntarily register for vat below the £70k limit and it’s a good idea if you want to deal with larger companies because they may insist on a vat number so they can claim back. However for vat you need to make sure you know exactly what you need to charge vat on & what you don’t and then keep absolutely scrupulous records as the vat man is considerably worse than the tax man when it comes to sticking to the letter of the law - one wrong calculation or dubious receipt and they will bring out the fine tooth comb.

Me neither …

Take your pick, full fat or semi skimmed VAT. IF you can put up with the palarva of basic spreadsheet acccounting you can build the VAT aspect into the spreadsheet

In order of people I fear most:
HMRC - the VAT man
VOSA
The Police
GOD
SWMBO

You must give the charts to the transport operator no later than 42 days from the day following the date on the chart, this applies regardless of whether you’re self employed or an employee of said company or an agency driver.

im going the fully self employed route in about 6 weeks and a very kind member on here has agreed to help me set everything up    :sunglasses:

im on nova at the minute and its not as good as it was and i cant wait to dump it. im only using it as a halfway house till the work picks up.

You’ve obviously never been on the end of a tax investigation then!

Primarily, the VAT man will look solely at your VAT Records relating to your business. The Tax man however, will delve into aspects of your personal affairs, even down to how much you spend on things like your weekly shopping, or how much you smoke and drink.

Considering both of them are now part of the same government department, they work pretty much to the same agenda. Do things right and pay the right amount of tax or VAT and you won’t have any problems.
