Hi Romik , it’s now Tuesday night you have had 2 days at it hopefully , how has it gone so far?
Jim
Thank you for asking. About to hit the sack in the DAF. First day when I got to work was bloody nightmare, I was basically thrown into deep waters. I almost walked out, as I thought somebody would help, but as expected other drivers were busy getting their weapons ready and had no time & it’s not their job really, there should be proper induction in place. Anyway, I stayed on and managed to basically teach myself how to do this and that. Today second day was much easier, but more work.

So come on then OP how did you get on ?
Im interested to find out as i might be in the same position soon.
Oh yeah and did you use the baby wipes from the fridge
First day is always daunting if you have never done it before.Your only taught to pass a test and not to do a job.The job comes with experience if you find yourself getting stressed pull over where its safe and have 10 mins to get your self together .If your not sure ask questions doesn’t matter how many times you ask,you and the company would rather get the job done right rather than wrong.Dont be shy either if you don’t ask you wont know.Bring some cash with you for a drink or something to eat later on and don’t try and rush the job either.A company would rather see you there in one piece doesn’t matter what sort of driver you are.I think the 2 week trial is abit out of order as well.If you don’t like it there is plenty of driver agencys offering work for new drivers
Right! I just typed a ■■■■■■■■ and deleted it accidentally, so after 3rd 15 hr shift I am too tired to retype it. To summarise. Every day is different so far, we mostly do pallet chauffeuring, only handball I have is opening & closing curtain & securing load, which was a mission today in the rainy evening as I was last to be loaded for am mission and forkys wanted to go home, so imagine a wagon being loaded by 3 flts all eager to get home, I was flying round the wagon with straps in my hands so they don’t get smashed by those numties. Raining too. Now after a long day of tipping at Asda & Tesco hubs (huge they were) I am at McDs having a cup of chai. Was a mission to find a ■■■■■■■ when I parked onight at industrial estate, if no McDs would have to be an under the tree kinda job, blame the dog. So when tipping at hubs I had no idea what and how, but if you like the job and want to learn you will find a way. On first day I was fuming, now I enjoy it. It’s simple, yet not easy when you have no idea. I think this lot I am working for at the moment are extreme at not wishing to hold anybody’s hand basically, they want to sort men from boys, if you want it badly enough you will make it. People that need to be constantly told how this and that won’t survive this IMO, as gaffer won’t be telling where this plant is or how to detour this bridge, etc. Right guys, I need to finish this tea & walk back to the wagon, as I am wasted, even though I did 5.5 hours POA today at the hubs
Going on my 1st job tomorrow . Llz dont even know what is… but is 10/h which is good. Ill let you guys know tomorrow how it was (class2).
Least you are keeping your head above water. Its tough on newbies, as you said the test doesn’t teach you nothing about the actual work and most companies expect you to know what you are doing. Keep plugging away man, it will get better. You’ll find what you do and don’t like and ways of cutting through all the BS.
Picked up 14 plts from asian bakery, flipping heck…pallets like skyscrapers, one was sticking out like no chance! He kept saying it’s Ok, you got curtain, I kept saying curtain ain’t gonna shut. All fun & games. Now I got umbrella company on my back, weekend will be spent figuring out how I will be better off with an umbrella company paying me.
Good luck tomorrow mate, it will work out fine.
Well done Romik - thrown in at the very deep end and sticking it out very well! Good on ya!
well done romik, you said umbrella on your back, the usual i expect we need your mileage receipts etc tell them to ■■■■ off and do something for the theft theyr doing, ie google your mileage as they should know off agency where your workin, same happened to me bud i jibbd them paye for me every time but good luck on your travels

You wont really you’d be better off ltd company .
So guys. Today my 1st shift ever (class2) . Been at 6am to yard. Half minute induction lolz got a mercedes 18T full loaded with scrap went to a waste management company somewhere in derbyshire. There about 5 miles farm road very narrow barely pass 2 small cars ( bad road to start driving lolz) than they sent me in birmingham in smetwick on other narrow residential roads where is very heavy traffic. But in the end all was good they were very satisfied got a good feed back from them. It was much much easier than expected.
Now monday i am starting an ongoing contract 5 to 6 days a week with 11£/h. Think is good.
It’s with PALLETWAYS.
Anyone any review abot them?
Is that days or nights mate? Well done btw.

Be prepared to have everything and anything loaded onto your wagon. Stand your ground with badly packaged pallets, get them to redo them if you are unhappy about it. Its normally chaos at those sorts of places, turn around is quite fast depending on the time of day. I came back from one with a pallet of bricks, a pallet of bog roll and half an engine amongst other things. Make sure your curtains are also done up tight as well before you leave. Once anything is loaded onto you, it becomes your responsibility.
You know what is interesting, when I was tipping at ASDA & TESCO hubs, I think I was the only one with straps securing pallets as I was asked to undo them, none of the other drivers were asked. It was a bit of a revelation, does anyone bother?
