Going for class 1

Well it’s been a while since I have been on here. I passed my class 2 18 months ago and have been driving a tipper since then, which I love. The problem is the pay and it seems that the only to improve this is doing my class 1■■?.

So the question is the pit fall in doing the class 1 since driving class 2 , getting a job as new qualified class 1. I am based in Widnes and did my training with ‘Town & Country’

Any advice good or bad accept!,

To be fair, tipper work is amongst the lowest payed VAN work pal.
Yes you can get better paid Class 1 work, along with better paid Class 2 work.
The difference though will be the EFFORT required for the money, with Class 1 being easier…

You’re already familiar with the size (width) and weight of driving large vehicles, but you may not be quite so familiar with things like hitching up. So depending on how eager you are to get in a real truck  you could consider driving a rigid at a firm that runs both classes and look to move up through that firm, possible getting a bit of free practice along the way. Coupled with the possibility that they may put you through the training if you’re prepared to stick with them for a while.

Alternatively you can pay for Class 1 yourself and either go knocking on doors or signing up with an agency and having the keys thrown at you. If you go for the directly employed route, don’t be surprised if they start you off in a VAN to see what you’re like to start with. As for agency, you might get a start with no experience, it just depends what the driver demand is like in your area…

Depends what you are looking for Mark. I live next door to you (Warrington), and although there is plenty class 1 work available, you will struggle to get more than £10 per hour (Mon-Fri days).

On the plus side, you can buy the house next door to beaver for a weeks wages!
Can’t understand why it’s so cheap? :open_mouth:

All the jobs I see are through the agency. Don’t get me wrong I don’t earn bad money, 40 hrs , + 10 at time n half ( this is my normal week 50 hrs) = £400 take home

Oh Beezle…you are a silly billy.

I don’t have any houses next to me. I live in a nice detached dam.

(Although we do have a couple of otters downstream who can get a bit rowdy).
