I recently passed my cat C and was wondering if anyone could clear something up for me - roughly 7 years ago, I was disqualified from driving. I was pulled over and breathalysed on my way to work, I was still over the drink drive limit from the previous evening - I got a 12 month ban.
I know with regards to car insurance, I stopped declaring it after 5 years - do companies who employ drivers tend to have a similar policy, or do they tend not to employ drivers with disqualifications until they have completely disappeared from their licences?
Switch to something else you do not have cat in hells chance of getting anything on wagons. If you do miraculously get a job then I would say the employer is 99% bent and wants you to take the risk of him. Don’t waste your money. Sorry
If it isn’t in your licence anymore and you do not declare it then they do not need to know as it is spent
I have read somewhere that with the scrapping of the paper counterpart the new online system in its place will not show the DR code after more than 5 years.
I don’t have such a code on my licence so can’t tell you if this is true but I certainly read it somewhere. So if this is true then get ride of your paper part and get a print out from the online system.
The new system is live now so why not go check it out for yourself. All you need is licence number, NI number and your postcode.

Why are you concerned

My employer is paying for me to do a category C course and test.

This is correct.
The offence is over 5 years old so even though still on your licence (for 11 years) the new Share My Licence system used by employers will not disclose this information due to the ROA.
I wouldn’t be surprised if most employers now ask if you’ve previously been disqualified during their selection process. In which case any mis truths subsequently discovered would be grounds for instant dismissal.
That’s not to say all will, but something which probably should be considered.

So if it is neither displayed nor disclosed after five years, how is it actually “on your licence”? Even if that is technically the case for a further six years, for all practical purposes it doesn’t seem to exist. Other than DVLA, how is anyone else supposed to find out about it?

That’s a peculiar way to run things…
My limited understanding is that it still sits on your file with DVLA but the new share your licence online system will not display it because it is over 5 years old.
Obviously if an employer asks directly it would have to be disclosed but I reckon most employers won’t ask - they’ll just check the printout from the online system.

It’s for court sentencing purposes in the case of re-offending.

Completely disagree. I’m an operator, I run 100% straight, am on green/green on the DVSA OCRS system and if I was looking for a driver then a disqualification seven years ago would not deter me from taking on that driver if he seemed suitable for the job. Why should it, the only reason a haulier would decline to take on a driver with convictions would be because he either thought the driver would re-offend, or because the insurance company would impose a higher premium, which wouldn’t be the case if the offence did not have to be declared.
