still looking for a job cant get on no where mainly cuz im 20 but i dont mind driving vans but the same old thing keeps poping up 21 or 25 insurance mate sorry
so dont know what i can do expept sack driving of completly and go get a poksy shop job or someother crap on £2.50 an hour
You’ll get something eventually Fozzie, but if needs must to tide you over, then if you can stick it, why not. Me I’m going to be back on the agencies next week. 'Cause of the ones I’ve been offered, they’re either crap money or nothing suits . Maybe I’m being too choosy, but it’s agency again next week:
.
Like you fozzie I am also under 25 and have had the
25 insurance mate sorry and drivers over 25 get the
2 year experience thing. But eventually most of
us get something eventually just like you will. Have
you tried agencies and contacting companies by
phone, in person and sending your cv in. With the
age limit being 21 to take class 1&2 test’s you
might be better of trying for work with 7.5 tons
as 7.5 tons age limit is 18 to take the test
and gain experience on 7.5 tons and then move up
to class 2 or possibly class 1.
You seem to be in the exact same position as me mate, I’m 20 too and did alot of van driving until the company decided they were gonna get one of their own guys to drive my van as my agency was charging too much, hence I got shafted with no warning. At the moment I’m forklift driving at a timber yard which isn’t too bad and it’ll do until my 21st birthday in April.
Once you’re 21 and passed your tests, dont sit around and wait for agencies to set you on, go round the companies in person and chat to them in person. Alot of companies advertise for 25 and above drivers, but when it comes down to it, if they want a driver, they’ll take you on at any age. My dads company is a fine example, they advertise for 25+ but the boss reckons he’ll take me on as soon as I pass and he said himself that the £500 excess (or whatever it was) is worth paying if it saves a truck from standing in the yard all week with no driver.
Have you been direct by the big firms and questioned the transportmanager direct, some times this approach is better than a
letter or telephone call, Try it what about the big tanker firms the are
all ways needing new blood for the future as the older drivers go and
leave the trade. or the milk transport branch, bets of luck and you will
find some one who will take you on,
Approach some of the smaller firms. When I was 22 I went to work for a mate who had a small 3 vehicle fleet. I mentioned the 25 thing and he said basically it was a load of rubbish and used as an excuse. He said his insurance went up £100 which is so insignificant when compared to the running cost of an artic, that it wasn’t worth worrying about.
Try asda mate if you just wanna drive. There home shopping staff only have to be 18+ and its not a bad job either + pays about £5.50 ph which ain’t bad!
Stick with it, I’m only 24 and never really had that much trouble finding stuff either on vans and more recently on rigids.
Stick with it Fozzie, its often a case of in the right place at the right time. Have you tried Heaton’s? don’t know anything about them other than they are at St Helens, Merton St I think it is.
Good luck M8
