Getting my Cat C back?

Hi all. First post to the group, so please be gentle with me.

Back in the mists of time I was in the RAF where I did my Cat C. I left 18 years ago and started a career offshore. As you will all know, the offshore industry is going through a very rocky patch just now, and has left me looking for an alternative means of paying the bills.

Apart from renewing my medical as I’m nearly 49 now and my Cat C is out of date, what would you guys suggest as my best route into the industry?

As I haven’t driven anything bigger than a transit for about 20 years, I’m seriously thinking about starting from scratch and resitting my Cat C. I’m eventually hoping to do my C+E.

With that in mind, I live out west of Glasgow so can anybody recommend a good training school?

Cheers in advance for any advice.

Do D4 medical and get LGV back = easy
Will need a DQC to drive a LGV commercially - choice of doing 2 initial dcpc tests 2 + 4 or doing 35 hours dcpc periodic attendance
Most will now need a Digicard - you can apply now for that

C+E schools = see the link in my signature below

If you passed the old HGV test before 1984 then you may have an issue getting it back as only tests after that went on to the DVLA database

System will not allow you to take another C test if your original in on the database

Thanks for that Rog. I’ve already applied for my digicard, and I’ve got my medical in a couple of hours.

My Cat C was post 84, but I’m sure I’ll find a training centre that will be willing to let me do my Cat C course without resitting the exam. Money in the bank for them, and I’d rather refamiliarise myself than just jump in a truck like it was yesterday I last drove one.

Bet you will find that doing 4 hours of training will bring it all back - they did for others in your situation when I was instructing

Thanks again Rog.

Why don’t you see if you can get a bit of van or cat C1 work through an agency then step up to cat C when you feel confident enough.

That way you’ll be getting paid for the learning process rather than paying for it.

I agree with Tachograph. And for your CE try Richies.

Sounds like a plan. Cheers guys.
