Getting a job....

Hey guys! Have any newly passed drivers found work in a permanent position rather than having to go on agency as I am trying to get a mortgage and do not want agency work. Also, any tips for interviews as have had only one in my life and been at that job ever since! Cheers in advance!

Yea I found a permanent position through hermies left them for a permanent position with holdsworths . Never used agency

I know Sam Ledger has, he’ll be around here somewhere

It can definitely be done, although most will tell you that it won’t be the best or most glamorous work, but it’s work nonetheless. At least it gets your foot in the ladder!

My advice is to write yourself a good CV, and a cover letter which states your intentions to get into the trade, and that you are always willing to learn, etc, and then go around your local haulage companies and give them to the transport manager in person. They may invite you in, or give you an application form, and if they do, you’re one step closer, and if they say there aren’t any vacancies, don’t worry and move on.

Ignore what it says on websites as the required experience, they may just put it to try and get more experienced drivers, and if you come across well to them, they might just turn a blind eye.

In my opinion you have the least chances if you apply by e-mail or online, more chances if you apply by phone, and the best chances if you ask face-to-face. People react differently when they’re face-to-face, so you never know, you may just catch the right person at the right time!

For the interview, because you’re new, they’ll probably focus on looking at your motivational aspects and aspirations, rather than what you can do, or have done.

Good luck for everything :grimacing:

I’m ere lol

Ye I got a perm position took me from end of Nov and I started 2 weeks ago I got knock back after knock back was getting fed up but just keep at it I ended walking in to the office and asked them.directly a week later had a assessment drive.then started the Monday after that the work I do isn’t bad at all long hours but that’s the norm I did one shift for heron cage work but I’d never do it again lol that type of work I’s horrible but if u don’t mind doing it for a start do supermarket work personally there isn’t enough money to get me to ever do that again but that’s just me and if you go door knocking take your work bag with u to be ready to go there and then good look for finding something

I found a job not long after I passed CE a few years ago went round quiet a few places had knock back after knock back still 1 day a call came in started a few days later have moved on but got the start

Yeah i was lucky i got the 1st i applied for well kinda…
I applied for class 2 they said they have a vacancy for 7.5 ton if im interested give it a few months if im good i can move up if a vacancy arises.
4 weeks later i got a opening i got a class 2 job with a pay hike and i been there 7 months and have booked my class 1 for march with a view to move up again.
Im not alone in my company few new younger drivers but the job is hard work ( handball) but good money.
So yea it can happen.
I may be wrong but companies that deliver food ingredients will normally take a punt, and i got the impression bigger company’s are willing to pay the insurance, plus it can be a young mans job so its catch 22 for them in that sense.
Tips for interview, dress smart smile show enthusiam and convince them that even though you lack experience your attitude and motivation will make up for it.
Good luck keep trying

Firms also recruit agency workers if they like the look of them, or are desperate!
And one of the few the pluses of agencies, is you can move around a bit and see what you do and don’t like…

as others say…go and knock on some doors and show your face…it worked for me!

Thanks a lot guys for all the responses. Some great tips in there! My only worry is I passed my class 2 in November and cpc last week and I feel like I’m forgetting how to drive a lorry! So come the assessment drive I’ll be a bag of nerves.

You’ll probably be lucky to even get one if you go agency…

I’ve only ever had 1 assessment drive, never had one on agency though. It’ll come flooding back to you in no time once you get back behind the wheel.

I’m not there yet. Worked agency for 9 months (last 3 months I tried to start my own business, so I have been off the boil). Now I’ve got Cat CE and going anywhere to try and get something. Best hit was a recovery company. My chances aren’t the best as I’m only 20, and I’ve got long hair (and a nose piercing, oh my). But I believe that with enough effort and some good manners, anyone can get a job. Even me eventually
