There is a pictorial pdf about this subject here, and yes they do open you up to check in several controls.

Where to start?
Basically, no matter how well you secure your load, chances are that plod or the BAG will find something wrong with it if you get pulled, as they’ve all been to training skool, innit!
If you do not have side boards on your trailer, then be sure to have loads of (preferably) aluminium slats to retain the load on at least 3 points of its height (for normal height palletised goods). If the load is a tight fit up to the sides of the trailer with slats fitted (ie 2 Europallets sideways on or 3 Europallets lengthways, giving a load width in each case of 2.40m) then you should be able to get away by using a retaining bar behind the last pallet. The higher the pallets, the more side slats you will need.
However, if the load is not a tight fit up to the sides of the trailer, or you haven’t got enough slats, then be prepared to strap EVERY row of pallets down (using plastic corner protectors if necessary to prevent the straps chafing / damaging the load)
On specialised loads, like chipboard, for example, the sky’s the limit.
No matter how many anti slip mats you place between the separate packets and how many straps you use, chances are The Man will deem it insufficient
So, best advice: Make sure you have plenty of straps (15+ on a standard curtainsider), loads of plastic corner protectors, a couple of rolls of anti-slip matting, and a full compliment of aluminium side slats for the trailer and you should be prepared for most eventualities.
And: if in doubt, STRAP IT!!
Strapping also depends on your trailer (XXL)
Boards always as high as the load the rest underneath
No twisted straps
They dont like the clamp boards much, always try to stap the last row
No knackered straps
Tip!!! dont use all of your straps, if you get pulled and they find something, which they will you have got some in reserve
Geoff
would it be better to have a van following and carrying all the kit you need ?

Why do you think the German transport industry wants the “Mega Liner”, to carry more pallets?
might be a wee business in it with a van all chevroned up like the wide load ones but the emergency strap van

6,95€ the set here, if you know the soure
sssshhhhh. keep all that to pm’s , you never know who is watching !
gbtransp:
No twisted straps
True: some jobsworth pedants will do you for having twists in your straps
And don’t even think of using knotted straps!

Most modern trailers will have spring loaded retaining bars that will slot into holes in the side slats. These are deemed to be acceptable, as opposed to the old fashioned clamp boards that relied purely on friction to hold them in place and are therefore “Nix Gut”
gbtransp:
No knackered straps
Frayed or worn straps, or straps with the load ticket missing (sewn into one end of the strap) will find you contributing to the Polizei annual knees up
Gute Fahrt in Deutschland
I’ve yet to see a rope that has a load ticket, so can I assume that the Polizei don’t approve of dolly knots then??
Zutreffendes ankreuzen!!
I would imagine their response would be along the lines of “Himmel, Arsch und Zwirn”, followed by “You must pay”

I would be expecting " OOoohh, lovely, a nice little earner here" .
Great idea, a van load of straps and anti slip matting, just like the one on the Lux border during a control. I wonder how they fasten the straps in
hi all, best idea re the german load restraints… get somebody else to do the load, then its their problem not yours!!! see? easy… they boxheads are supposedly changing the rules again next year anyway!! i went to koln last week with a full load of febreeze, put the alliminum bar i got at the back of the load, i.e across pallets 31/2/3 and then put a strap(with its sell by date on!) over the top of said pallets, no problem for deutchaplod or the baggy, my reload was a load of nappys, funny that with the crap u gotta put up with when going to the fatherland now i thought that was rather appropriate!
