German MAUT Question/Query

I have been told, that if you come off the Rheinfelden Border out of Switzerland into Germany, having loaded in Swiss, that you do not have to pay the German Tax on the A98 up past Lorrach to the Weil am Rhein Split, and then upto Neuneburg/A36 split as its free to allow you access back into France

Can anyone confirm if this is true of not, as it seems an awful long way for the Germans to allow you to run without paying.

As you come out of Weil am Rhein, there’s a sign saying MAUT required from here, or words to that effect, starting immediately after the St Louis junction.

Here is a link to the MAUTTabelle (MAUT Table) of roads where the toll is payable.

On the A98, you pay the toll from j1 to j7 and then from j11 to the end, the junction with the B31.
That’s from the Weil an Rhein Dreieck, up past Lorrach to the next junction, at the Hochrhein Dreieck. Then from the Hegau Kreuz to Stockach Ost.

If you get yourself a MAUT map book, free from the Toll Collect people, it shows you which Autobahns and Bundesstrassen you have to pay on AND which ones are free.
This is the book for planning your route on, to pre-book it by machine.
It also shows you where all the machines are and where to find service partners for the OBUs.
You can no-longer just go to a booth and pick one up though, they’ll give you the info on where to ask for one. You can probably find that out on the toll collect website. There’s a link to it in the Euro Drivers Info Point at the top of this forum.

So, am I right in thinking that you must plan your entire journey in germany in andvance and enter this in maut booth ?

if you look at the euro sticky
there is a site which has all
about the maut, and will
answer your question,
if you are unfortunante
and have to book your route
in one of the maut machines
then you will need to plan how you
use the maut system,HAVEING a OBU
unit fitted makes life easy and saves
stress when the motorway gets closed and
you have to divert off and reroute
the machine will show you the route from
where you are to where you have entered
this is the route you must use when booking
your journey through a maut machine
whereas a lorry with a OBU unit can go where
ever way they wish

It isn’t even as simple as that paddy :open_mouth: .
There is a time limit, after which your ticket becomes invalid.

I used to have to pre-book my journeys on the MAUT / Toll Collect machines. It wasn’t too bad as I had a Toll Collect card, with all my vehicle and payment details on it, which simplified things slightly.
I’ve now got an OBU, which makes it VERY simple

If you know exactly where you’re going, and you can complete your journey in Germany in a day. Then you can book your entire journey on a MAUT booth in one go.
If not, it’s safer not to book the entire journey in one go. Break it down into stages and book it a stage at a time.
You have to book each stage before getting onto the autobahn to do that stage though.

IMHO without the OBU the Maut system seems to be designed to catch people out.

When I use to load with my VDB truck and come from Koblenz to Lorrach. I passed the maut sign, and kept my head down :open_mouth: It wasnt possible to buy MAUT in Koblenz.

However when I got a new truck with an OBU, it never bleeped whenever I came back that way :exclamation:

I got caught out once without paying the Maut, i got on the autobahn and was looking for the first place to buy a maut ticket, but the BAG caught up with me and i finnished up with a €236 fine!!! :open_mouth: :open_mouth: :unamused:

There are not any sensors on that stretch. Its a forgotten backwater.

This is the sign you pass, which I know you shouldnt pass

Sounds like you were alright then. I always looked out for those Gantries with all the sensors on. That’s how we are all watched. :open_mouth: :unamused:

But the gantries dont jump out and nick you, it is the 300 BAG control vans with the lap top on the passengers knee

You are charged for 500km as a fine :open_mouth:

I was answering the specific bit about the A98 and the signs.

There is a small Shell garage in which probably does sell MAUT for that section

I can remember one time just managed to get back out to ■■■■■■ before time was up and they were dozens of them BAGs in there all ready to pounce. I didn’t half get some looks off them as I pulled in past them. I was real glad the truck had the OBU that time.

And, if your tipping in germany, remember… when you’ve bought your ticket at the border, for your trip into germany…before you come off the autobahn, to tip, you must buy your ticket for your return journey…confused so was I !!

Not necessarily, there are a lot of MAUT machines in towns and villages near motorways. We never know where we are going till we have tipped out

from the split coming off the Mullhouse motorway down the the split at Lorach the Maut machine in my cab says its a free bit ( you never needed the old vignette on this bit either) it comes back on again at the lorach split as we use the Koblenz border xing into swiss

Thanks for that, seems like I was lucky then  Maybe you know if the Shell garage with the parking & nice sandwiches, do the Maut as well.
