Geographic test

Hey All,

Bit of a stoopid question, but…
Just thinking ahead a little (dangerous I know) but does anyone have an example/link to the ‘Geographic test’ that I believe quite a few agencies use for new drivers.
Or failing that, have done one and know what kind of places are asked about - i.e. is it purely the location of cities/towns around the UK? or also include M’Ways and major A roads too? or maybe it goes down to where major ports/RDC’s are etc?

A search on here and google yielded little/no info - apart from the fact such tests exist.

Cheers,
Jon

‘Geographic test’

Yes its called taking a bloody map along with you  what can the agency complain about

It’s been a long time since I did any agency but if I remember correctly it was basic stuff like…
Which motorway would you use between London and Wales,or which motorway would you use between Birmingham and Carlisle.
Honestly,I remember it being as basic as that and thought ffs although it may be different now.

I shouldn’t worry about it too much Jon.

It would be a really good start to know where the motorways start and finish.

Then study a map. You’ll find that A roads are in geographical areas. eg you wont find a road number starting with a 7 in the SW. Note where the teens are, the 20’s, 30’s etc. The A38 is a pain as you’ll see when you look at a map - but it’s the exception that proves the rule!

It takes a lot of practice to get really familiar with the road network and, sadly, sat navs don’t help in this regard.

Any test will take into account that no-one can know it all. But the above will give you a start.

Never I 30 odd years been asked

Thanks for the contributions so far. And yes, I knew it was one of those ‘weird’ questions to ask when I decided to put it up.
If it’s really as simple as ShropsBri says, then no problem.

Obviously this kind of knowledge develops as you become more experienced - directly related to the amount of driving you do as well as how varied, geographically, it is.
Also, what does an agency, or employer for that matter, expect you’re going to do? They give you a job and you just blunder out onto the roads relying purely on the knowledge in your head and set off in the general direction? No of course - assuming you haven’t been there before, you get a map or sat-nav out and PLAN a route, confirming as you do any road restrictions, known roadworks etc etc.

So, even though I think it’s weird some agencies do such a ‘test’, fact is they do and it’s better to have an idea of its nature from people who have seen or done one.
