Is there such a thing as general haulage without multidrop? The general haulage I’ve been doing consists of anything from 3 to 10 drops a day on a rigid, I’m looking for artic work but holding on until I find the right job as not in any big rush.
Probably not, you need night trunking or brewery primary distribution
More chance on an artic to be honest, but even my last general job some days you had 12 drops or more and getting constantly asked why you are late …
Depends if you’re a day man or not.
I’m currently waiting to tip my 6th drop of the week.from here it will probably be one more collection, which will see my week out.
So you reckon more chance of getting multidrop on days?
Yes when most places are open, night trunking moves the stuff around the country.

Yes.
Day men tend to do all the local stuff…night men do the trunking and trampers do the longer distances.
Dock work is the closest I’ve got to it but even then you usually do a delivery in the morning, go back and reload and then do a delivery in the afternoon.
It really makes no difference in that ‘general haulage’ is often regarded by the guvnors as just another form of multi drop wether artics or rigids. With artics often just seen as a way of either getting either more drops on a wagon and/or larger heavier loads per drop.Especially when applied to building materials deliveries. The time to sort out what type of work is being offered is at the recruitment stage. The key words being distance, tramping, and full loads from the drivers’ point of view as opposed to the usual local/medium distance multi drop from the guvnor’s.Certain types of long distance, especially international, trunking probably fitting that definition more than so called ‘general haulage’.
In all cases as usual there is historically a pecking order in which owner drivers or foreign operators usually get the best pick of such work with the rest being a case of who you know and/or extreme luck and dead man’s shoes while agencies or the Jobcentres take the worst in the form of the usual local multi drop zb.
Which is why I walked away from a similar type of operation which you’ve described but driving artics not rigids and settled for 15 years of night trunking.Instead of the long haul international trunking with demount drawbars on an operation like IPEC which I really wanted.

Doesn’t seem to work like that where I am! Just had a conversation with the boss on Tuesday about agency drivers - I didn’t realise they used any. The boss said “oh yeah, we use them, but they get all the handy stuff - any more than 1 drop and they complain like ■■■■!” My response - “I didn’t realise we did runs like that, I thought they were all ■■■■■■ multidrops!” Think I’ll get on the agency books, probably getting better money and their pick of the work!
Downtons (general haulage) or F&W (fruit & veg) on nights.
If you don’t like multidrop - I’d recommend going onto nights.
i do specialist work mostly but a bit of general haulage now and then. my last full load delivery was to Cadiz, spain. 1672 miles
I work for general haulage company, although the bulk of it is steel, we also move portable buildings, crash barriers, bricks, etc
Normally 1 drop a day, maybe a reload depending on location…sometimes 2 drops…all depends on where you are and where the work is…
Today for example , started at The Stockyard after loading in Hull yesterday, tipped West Brom, reload Dudley, tip Lydney, swap trailers at Newport for Alfreton tomorrow.
Are you lot for real? Whats wrong with two or more deliveries in a day with a artic? Are you incapable of doing more than one delivery?
Lazy buggers. Go trunk for Tosco.

+1
Although technically correct that anything more than one delivery is mulitdrop. 10 pallets to one place, 8 to another and 8 somewhere else, isn’t my idea of multidrop.
I enjoy the odd multi drop load it’s rare I get one as I usually do 1 drop a day and back empty usually delivering Precast concrete products but we do the occasional load of form work or scaffolding or fencing which is good for a change every so often I think variety is good thing personally ! But it’s not for everyone my education was on General haulage multi drop driving a 6 wheel rigid doing 5-6 drops a day nationwide of anything from animal feeds to food products and beer and back loading anything from steel to woman’s knickers ! If u don’t want multi drop or multi loads id reccommend u work nights or get a trunking job !

S’no good - you’re under pressure to do more than one delivery there as well.
Agree with you nodding donkey. One drop a day would bore me to tears.
Takes all sorts I suppose.

Yeah,
Dayshift, nightshift and tramping with us, vast majority of the time is all just one drop and one return pick up.
Most iv ever done was 3 drops and one pick up in a day.
All artics only.
Truckster5 sounds like my ideal job that lol what firm is that?
